you could also just use a timer that you plug into an outlet and plug a regular light into that.....

 

no its a special tool for setting the ignition timing on an engine.

 

and i found one, its made by sears and it clearly older than we are, but i'll bet it still works

My dad had/has the same one if it has a rotary **** on the back of it for offsetting the timing by x-degrees.

 

What do you need chalk for? TDC should be marked on the harmonic damper and the timing cover should have a pointer secured by one of the lower driver's side bolts.

How do you advance or retard the timing a set amount if it only strobes at TDC and only TDC is marked on the harmonic damper?

 

you chalk over the line on the damper and it makes it easier to see

 

there are more markings. i havent done mine yet, but on my old truck it had markings up to 10 degrees.

 

when people talk about setting the timing on a diesel, what the hell are they talking about? injector timing?

same **** as before, stalls wen i put it into gear. i think the torque converter is the issue but i want to test out any other possibilities before i go throwing money at it.

Use white paint or scratch the rust off with a pick so they stand out if you can't find chalk.
I know they sell stickers with the marks. You would have to make sure it is made for the same diameter damper though and make it sticks to the rusty *** metal that it is probably made of.

 

Exactly. Timing of the injector pule with relation to piston top dead center. How's that for engineer over-speak?
