and i have never heard another name for it besides beenie - what else is there

I have to idea what other name there is...but I feel that you are correct that it is a beanie.
There are plenty of other things to wear on the head:
1. a cool baseball hat
2. those ski hats with the tassels- they're pretty cute on guys.
3. a hooded jacket (bonus)

3. Good unless theres a headwind, then theyre not helpful
