It's mostly more fuel, that why you see built up Diesels that dump a cloud of black smoke. It's caused by extra fuel. Nitrous or propane injection helps burn the extra fuel.

It burns cleaner and get better gas milage. Basically the cost of the propane is paid for in better milage. Break even. Benefit is added power when you need it and less soot in the exhaust/ engine oil. If it's metered properly propane won't effect engine life.
