Paint removal

I've gotten my hands on a rashed windscreen from a Buell M2 and I'd like to take the paint off of it, then re-paint.

Does anyone know a good product to use on it to strip the paint without damaging the plastic underneath?

Thanks!
Kevin

Re: Paint removal

The stuff I normally use is aircraft stipper but that will eat the plastic right up. Sounds like you might have to resort to good old paint thinner and a lot of scrubbin.

Re: Paint removal

yeah it will work, just have to soak it. That way it won't damage the plastic. Only thing I can think of off hand right now. You are talking about a rattle canned screen right?

Actually any Acetone based product which includes paint thinner will melt/haze into the plastic windshield regardless of what type it is ABS, Poly Propylene, etc. You could wet sand with 1000 or greater then polish the windshield, but you risk the possibility of burning the windshield in the process.

Your best bet sorry to say is live with it, or get a new windshield.

Also, if you plan on painting it again, just scuff it thoroughly with a scotch-brite pad, clean it, then re-spray it. No need to remove the existing paint unless it's chipped or something.

Yep, where it flexed the paint chipped off. The majority of the rash is easily sanded smooth, but where the paint chipped, I don't think I'd be able to get a smooth transition to paint.

Re: Paint removal

How's it going, just joined the Forum, thought I'd offer another idea on fixing the windshield. Use bondo or plastic filler to fill in the chipped spot and sand smooth. Scuff and repaint the screen. Might be useful.

Thanks. I was thinking about that myself.
