954 question
I just put a slip on, on my bike and when I took off the stock canister I notice a cone that looked like a baffle or something. Does anybody know what this is, and if I cut it off will it hurt anything or make my bike sound like ****! Or will it give a little better flow?
thats the factory baffle. It has something to do with the sound and back pressure vibrations and the way it reverberates back to the bike. It gets really complicated after that. I was explained the the whole thing by a race/techy guy but most of it was over my head. Honda over-engineering.
sometimes you have to cut it off to fit an aftermarket pipe. I had mine cut off and a new fuel injection map written after that by brighton superbike.

Honda tunes the **** out of their bikes exhausts. However, they're not necessarily tuning them for top power. Sound, emissions, etc are all requirments that they have to meet dictated by the gov. Like Over_Dose said, get a custom map made to get the most out of your bike. Powercommanders are nice, and you can easily change things yourself, and pull down other peoples maps off of the web to change.

I'd find a 954 board and ask there. I'm sure there are some on the CBR boards who have done it. Get their experiences.
I'd say that it probably won't make a power difference, but without seeing the exhaust system its hard to say.
Someone will probably find fault with this, but here's my understanding...
Exhaust engineers tune the exhaust with volume and length changes. Everytime the volume in the pipe changes, there is a pressure wave that travels forward in the pipe (to the exit) and another that travels back towards the engine. By tuning the length of the pipe between volume changes (or curves for that matter), the engineer controls whether or not the wave increases pressure at the combustion chamber or decreases pressure at the chamber when the exhaust valve is open. When the pressures are tuned correctly, this pressure can be used to help vent the combustion chamber, and to help pull the spent gasses from the chamber. By removing that cone, you MAY be changing the way the pressure waves are acting in the exhaust, and it MAY be detrimental to power.
I'm a radiator engineer, not an exhaust engineer, so I have no clue!!
Like I said...I'd check on the CBR boards and/or get a powercommander. Once I get the cash, that's going to be the first major mod to my bike. If the CBR is anything like my bike, it came from the factory rich at idle, and lean at other areas of the powerband. The powercommander will allow you to control this.
