Computers suck
I think I tracked down the source of my problem. Either the bios is messed up, a bad system partition, a bad MBR, or a bad boot sector.
And to think, this whole thing started because of a power outage while I was deleting a couple of files

Well, it KINDA worked. Ran the fixmbr and fixboot commands here, slaved the HD to my ma's computer, which allowed me to run chkdsk and the HD booted up. Was able to pull off the info that I wanted to keep.
But took the HD back home, ran an in-place upgrade reinstall several times, and I keep getting the same error. "load needed DLLs for kernel".
