What new bike to get
What new bike to get
I,m gonna upgrade next fall and seeing what honda, kawasaki and yamaha has put out, They all have pros and cons, I will say this so far I like the R1 the best the only thing about that is what I hear about the trannys from alot of people. THe new zx10r I dont like the front end .....maybe it will grow on me but I don't know. The CBR1000RR I like just dont like the side fairing that is minor though from the pics ive seen looks like the rpm's have increased...It's pretty much between the R1 and CBR1000r ...So the question I have is has anyone had problems with the transmissions in their R1?...or why yamaha has had this problem?

zx 10 looks Beautiful from the side.
And I think the zx 10 will be the best of the 1000's for another 4 years, and
I am a Suzuki Rider, K5 GSXR1000 & K7 Hayabusa.
My 02 R1 was better than any of the latest R1's, Far Better Clutch & Fueling, these new R1's just dont cut it. My Opinion.
Honda...........is going too far with this 08 version, it wont be a joy on the street like the older versions, too racey ergos and not good at all for even for the tiny women.
Suzuki K7&K8 GSXR1000 Awesome Everywhere but not the best looking.........

Re: What new bike to get
R1's are always the nicest looking, Hondas are usually the best quality, Susukis usually have that fastest motor. Since I don't race professionally on a track and none of the newer jap bikes really have any quality problems.........go with the looks, R1. I put 13K on my 02 and never had a single problem with it. I rode Tony's the other day and all I did was touch the throttle in second and the bike was straight up in the air. The Honda 600RR looks nice also, but everyone including my dog and cat own one. SORRY I forgot Kawasuki, they are really hit or miss depending on year and model. Just my 2 cents worth.
Re: What new bike to get
Hey have any of you guys seen the 08 1000rr in person yet? I was told by a salesman if you want one you're gonna have to order it @ msrp and there would be no choice of color. Not sure if he was fibbing a bit cause he had a black 07 on the showroom floor that he seemed to be desperate to sell......
Re: What new bike to get
Never heard of a tranny issue in any R1.. both mine were and are great and never a peep on the r1 forums neither. I suspect you heard it from a few people who owned an r1 and didnt use the clutch.
Re: What new bike to get
Billys 03 limited edition had some kind of issue with the tranny but I know Rob has had two R1's and hasnt had any problems and you and dan have had good luck with them ....probably right about the other people that has had issues with them stayed up researching it when i got home from work .....guess the only thing for me to decide is .....black or red ....thinking i might pick up an 08 in jan instead of the fall
Re: What new bike to get
Yammy's have had the reputation for trans problems. 2nd gear going out in early models because of the shift dog design. They've also been noted as "clunky" a bit. Again, I've never had a problem with my two.
Be real different and go buy the new Buell 1125R, suposed to be pretty bad azzz with a tons of torque and a torque curve that is FLAT. Most of them are accounted for from the sounds of it for the first 6 months or so though.

Yes the GSXR is now the all around Best........
But..............I cant wait to see how the 09 GSXR changes the world Yet Again like it did in 01
My hope anyway..........
But I really think this 08 ZX10 will be another Leap ahead

Yamaha DEFINATELY had some tranny problems, but that was mostly in the older models. The gear dogs were made poorly, so once they wore out they eventually fell apart inside. It usually starts with 1-2nd or 3nd-3rd false neutral which developes quickly into grinding gears and ends up with frozen ones. This problem was partially fixed with the YZF then pretty much eliminated with the R6. I dont think there was ever much of a problem with the r1k.
As far as which one to buy aside from looks, i would say it all depends on your riding style. Performance wise, yamaha usually dominates the track (stock) but stunt like a brick with the stock suspension. If you blow one up, it will probably blow your nuts off because of the engine design (the cylinder head is literally aimed at your nuts) Gixxers are decent all around, my only argument is that everyone and their mom has one. Honda's have a good reputation for lasting forever, I have about 20k miles on my 03 600rr and it runs right with my friends 06 600rr with only like 4k miles. Then again most bikes will last the same as long as you maintain them properly.
If it all comes down to looks for you, im probably the wrong guy to ask. I am pretty impartial, all the newer bikes look mean as hell. I am more of a performance guy. with just a couple hundred dollars you can make a bike faster than any other stock one in its class, so to me it all comes down to the nicest bike with the best price. I probably wont ever by a brand new bike anytime soon, especially if im just going to ride the hell out of it.

Hmmm, lots of good advice. Now that I've been riding a long time, the thing I like most is to have something different. I hated pulling up to a pack of bikes and there were 4 just like mine. I took care of that problem by buying KTM, I think there are probably two of them in the state.
Although you can do the same by buying a common bike and at least changing it's appearance. I bought the 02 R1 when it came out, like everyone else and then had Tony make a custom sticker package for it.
Again, I like having different. I've even thought about going to a real old style (retro) bike for my next one. It would look cool riding stand ups a mid-80's sport bike.:YEAH
