Wish me luck...
Gonna go play my first hockey game as a goalie tomorrow!
I got the final piece of my gear in the mail today (chest/arm protector) and I'm hittin up a drop-in game at noon tomorrow.
I'm kinda nervous because I've never skated with all that equipment on and I'm worried that if I fall, I won't be able to get right back up in a timely fashion.
But, it's my first game and I'm lookin to get as much practice in as possible before the season starts after easter.
So, if any of you early birds read this, say a little prayer for me so I don't hurt myself too badly!
I'll try to get some pics of me in action eventually.

No doubt he was flopping like a fish. I remember my first time and it was a lot harder then most people think. Get good pads that dont soak up water and snow.. the cheap ones do and gain 10-15 lbs over a session. Which makes a lot of difference when your trying to get from one side to another.
Remember play the puck not the shooter or body, good players can deceive you with their stick and body so always align with the puck. Also the farther out you can get on the shooter the less net they have to shoot at.. so dont stay back in the net unless the puck is behind it. If you have good defensemen they know that the goalie will always take the puck handler and they should take all other avenues and pass opportunities.
I still have all my stuff but I worried my leg now cant take the up and down, abuse that it requires with the rod in. Good luck its fun.. its fustrating and they always blame you but a good goalie knows what is his/her responsibility was on a goal.. most of the time you're hung out to dry and nothing you can do but shake it off.

Re: Wish me luck...
okay here's the report!
It was a fugin blast!
During warm up I was able to get the feel of taking slappers in the chest and basically getting in front of the puck.
There were two other goalies that showed up for drop in and they helped me out a little, but for the most part I was on my own. We took turns on the ice, 20 mins on, 10 mins off.
My first shift was down right horrible. I couldn't make a save for the life of me, and my feet felt like they were in a vice. I could pretty much hear my heart punding the whole time.
I took my break, and watched the other goalies.
Then on my second shift I got out there and right away my feet were feeling better and I had calmed down quite a bit. I was able to make a save on the first shot on net. and from there on out, I did pretty well. At least that's how I feel... I still gave up quite a few goals, but I felt I did alot better.
By my third and final shift I was completely relaxed and found myself chalenging the shooter more, and throwing my body around.
By the end I was a bucket of sweat, but I was smiling from ear to ear! It was so much fun.
Today when i woke up, my thighs were (still are) a little tight but nothing to really complain about.
Tonight I'm going to the drop in game at 7:30 to get some more practice in. Next to getting my first motorcycle this is probably the best investment I ever made!
