First, get a gun that fits your hand. Go to a good gunsmith and they can help you get the right size frame for your hand.
Fire some different guns, some ranges have pistols that they will rent for the day, and get see what you like best. If you know some people with guns, go with them and shoot theirs if they will let you. Try some different ones so you can feel the difference. Then get what feels the most comfortable to you.
If you like the feel of a .40 over a .45, get it. If you like a .380 over a .40 get that instead. Different brands chambered in the same round shoot differently so shoot as many different kinds as you can.
If you'd rather just go buy one ASAP, that's ok too. Keep in mind the cost of ammo though. One thing people often overlook is the cost of ammo. you won't find much .45 ammo for less than .20/rd, so even if you take an eternity and shoot a clip per minute, that's $1.60/min. And if you go to a local shop and buy a box of 50, it will usually coast more(.25-.50). I was used to running about 1000 rds/week through my issued USP in the military, but that ended pretty quick after I got out and began paying .25/rd for my own large cal pistols. I would go shooting somewhere, burn through $50 in 15 minutes, go home and not even feel like I went shooting that day because it was so quick. With a .22 though, I can hammer through 500 rds for 10 bucks and spend a while doing it. .38 ammo is pretty cheap too, and you can shoot it from a .357 so that makes a .357 nice. You get to shoot cheap .38 ammo all day long, and put some big shells in when you feel like it.
Beretta has a gun i like. You can change the barrels out, so let's say you buy a 9mm, you can shoot with the 9mm barrel in till you run out of money, then convert it over to a .22 barrel and receiver and shoot a lot more. Then switch it back to the 9mm for the ride home and hope someone tries to jack your **** so you can shoot their pecker off. The conversion kit is kind of expensive(about 300? IIRC), so that might be a factor for you also.
If your not going to shoot very often then that might not matter to you either, but it's something to think about.
People will tell you *this caliber* has the most stopping power, or *this caliber* has more penetration so it's the *best* for home protection. If your main goal is to get the best gun to protect your home, get a 12 ga. shotgun. If someone breaks into your home, most likely it will be dark and you'll be getting out of bed with sleepy eyes. You will hit more targets with a shotgun any night of the week than with a pistol. With a pistol, it's "Sight, Acquire, Fire". With a shotgun, it's "Sight(optional), Fire". No one is going to debate you on whether their pistol has more stopping power than your shotgun. Also, errant shot rounds from a shotgun fired inside your home arent going to travel across the street and take out your neighbors kid.
My OPINION:
1) H&K USP .45 is my favorite handgun, but that's only because they don't make a USP 10mm. It is the most reliable, unbreakable, smoothest gun I have shot.
2) 10mm is my favorite round. Plenty of power and great trajectory(1.1 in. drop at 100 yds.)
3) I shoot my .22 and .38 the most because the ammo is so cheap.
4) I would only port a pistol that is to be a range gun. From some other website, I forget where:
"Porting is not recommended, however, on handguns intended for self defense. The disadvantage of a ported handgun lies in the fact that when the gun is fired from a position close to the body, rather than from a position of extended arms, the shooter may be stunned or temporarily blinded by hot gasses and debris thrown vertically upward through the exhaust ports in the barrel. Hence, it is generally advised to avoid porting on handguns intended for personal protection rather than for hunting or target shooting applications. "
5) If someone breaks into my house or garage, my shotgun is the first thing I would grab, followed by a flashlight. I wouldn't even take a pistol. My shotgun is loaded with alternating slugs(long shot or engine block buster to make sure they don't drive away) and 00 buckshot. If that's not enough to handle them, it must be the Incredible Hulk so I would get a camera and take a picture of him wheeling away on my bike with my girl.

for home defense only nothing is gonna beat a pump action shotgun. I doubt there's anyone over 12 in america that could'nt identify the sound of a shell being chambered in a shotgun. That sound will straight up scare the **** out of any thief.

Just in case your interseted lasermax offers a internal laser for that model, it just came out. They are a little exspensive but hell after seeing that pic moneys no problem. Also just in case the crook is deaf and the shotgun sound doesn't work the red dot will demand some attention. This a pic of my xd-9 sub compact in the od green.
