My best friend is a porsche tech at a dealership in socal.
One of his clients has a team, and offered my friend the "job" of mechanic. I put job in quotes because he doesnt actually get paid, just all expenses taken care of. So every few weeks him, the other mechanic, and the driver get flown to different cities around the country for these events. This weekend was e-town, nj, so a few friends, and his family drove down to see him.
The event was pretty big, we all snuck in for free.

I had fun hanging out at the track and ****, but after learning what drifting is about, it really is absolutely nothing. Its not even a whole track, just a straight spot to get up to speed, then 2 turns, and thats it, its over. 2 cars go out at a time, and the guy in back has to stay as close to the guy in front without hitting him, and keeping the back out through the whole turn. Then they switch, and run again. Whoever does a better job of staying closer and hitting the least cones wins. Its not a race at all.

Might fool them if they are dumb enough to think bidding on BS contracts is a good idea.

now the "competition" is an absolute joke. my friends car makes 600 hp, theres a viper there with about 750 hp, and the rest of the cars there have about 250-300. So if one of teh 2 fast cars is in front, a slow car has no chance of keeping tight with it. Then when the fast car is in the back, they cant do much because theres a slow pos in the way. So from what i hear, teh viper (who is mopar sponsored) wins every time and my friends porsche gets second every time.

Yup. They get hardons about things like drift angle and "style". When there is only one axis to rotate about and all 4 wheels are on the ground, there is no such thing as style.

its not gonna help you outrun anybody. its not about speed, its about style.

now get this, the payouts for winning are next to nothing. The real money comes in tire sponsorships. my friends car is sponsored by hankook tires to the tune of $30 grand, plus infinite supply of tires

tokyo drift was a crappy movie, but the moves i saw on there, i'd never seen before. there isn't a drifting scene down here, so i thought it was pretty pimp.
