Exactly, the $ you save monthly can be used to repair/replace, and your insurance rates won't go up.

Back when i had my first bike my F2 i got hit by a car, destroyed the bike (almost myself too). bars were turned to the right, wheel was turned sideways to the left, frame neck was bent, swingarm had a dent in on the left rail, plastics were GONE-VAPORIZED. Even cracked the engine cases. I had liability only, i sold the bike to salvage for $200.

Got my Gixxer 600, with a perfect driving record at the time, it was either $300 for liability only, or $1200 for full coverage. I opted for liability only obviously. Even if you do have full coverage sometimes the insurance companies will still dick you over.

My sportbike history: Bought an 01 929. First tire change at the dealership............went down leaving the parking lot (I had no idea about the slickness of a new tire). Insurance claim fixed my bike and I pocketed $1,500 (the bike shop wrote up a bunch of stuff on the estimate that I didn't need). Second time was when I tankslapped in an endo. Filed a claim, but insurance said they would have to total out the bike and I would not have the option of buying it back. I withdrew the claim and did the vital repairs myself. Third time was while I was "road racing" in a state park. I drove it home, but there was a hell of a lot of damage. I reopened my previous claim, and they came and took the bike. Because I paid no money down, and my interest was so high (over 18%) I owed more than what the bike was worth. I got stuck oweing about $2,600 and no bike. Bought a 97 TL1000S. Laid over once when I fell off doing a seat stand (the bike laid over easy in the grass), and once more doing a circle burnout. No claims on the TLS though. Only time in the hospital was from the seat stand. Made that claim though my jobs health insurance ("dirtbike accident" lol). I pay about $35 a month for full coverage (State Farm). Sorry this is so long winded, but I'm trying to answer the original question.

insurance claims is why we pay so much....i have liability only....only thing i wish is if there was some way to cover for theft. without putting full coverage...1700 a year for my 01 750 and thats just a sunny day policy...9 months full...3 months limited use..i pay 170 for the sunny day policy for just liablity.
