if you do it right then no. if it's not smooth or you miss a shift or it's' kinda hard to shift that way, then you are putting stress on it and can bend the shift forks or round off the dogs (dog ears, whatever they call them).

i do it all the time.....have 20k miles on my 929, i did it all the time on my zx6 when i raced, and i do it all the time on my yz125 that i currently race.

as long as you catch teh tranny when it unloads the gears and shift then you are fine.

he probably showed you this so that you didn't burn your clutch through every gear if your new at it. not a bad way to learn but i think once you get the hang of it, using the cluth to shift is smother. just my opinion though.
good luck man.

It wont hurt it as long as your shifting is smooth, usually while, lets say going through first gear, your almost through the gear and you need to shift, right as you shift let off the throttle real fast and usually that helps it shift smoother.

I do it all the time aslong as you flick the throttle off as you do it you wont have any problems. If you do it right it's smoother than useing the clutch and easier to change gears when doing high speed wheelies
