That one sentence is what has caused the confusion and people jumping to conclusions, which I also did my self. Thats just human nature for things that upset them. By just that one sentance anyone who enjoys this sport would be upset when they see that it came from one of the well respected riders of the sport. Now that the WHOLE situation has been explained that the main part of not riding unless gettin paid has to do with traveling LONG distances and the wear and tear on personal things and finances not just "not gettin on my bike unless I get paid" The situation comes to a different light. What Gorka said is very understandable from anyones point of view expecially for us stunters with families and children such as myself and I wish him the best of luck. Sorry for the novel. Lata

First off, it's so funny how people change their tune when someone steps up to the plate..... at least we know who the leaders and followers are around here.
Secondly, this subject ALONE is one of the main reasons the original DTE doesn't exists anymore. We decided as a whole (minus one) that it's just not worth it for us anymore. In 2002, we somehow managed to travel to Florida (twice), Indiana (twice), Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio, New York, New Jersey (twice), Long Island, Pennsylvania (twice), Vermont, Maine, West Virginia, Connecticut, New Hampshire (twice), and many local shows. We spent all our money, time, and health on helping this sport get off the ground..... Now mind you we all have careers throughout this. I am an Art Director, Chris is a Teacher, Damien is a Licensed Plumber, Johnny was a Software Programmer, and Chauncey wore diapers but that is besides the point..... we all have careers that require some major attention... especially to excel within. It was weekend after weekend of traveling in 2002. I remember, we had it down to a science..... Thursday Night was packing the trailer, Friday (right after work) we would leave to drive all night, Saturday (sometime in the morning) we would arrive just in time to qualify / setup, Saturday night we would party all night, Sunday we would compete, Sunday night - start the drive home. We would end up pulling into our driveways just in time for a shower and then head out to work. I know what you're thinking, "Why not take some vacation time?"... YEAH, we used it all up doing shows, or bike week, or something pertaining to bikes. Oh yeah, we did 6-7 bike expos promoting.... it just never ended. Where do you draw the line? My family didn't know me anymore, my girlfriend didn't like me / never saw me, my job was in jepordy, all my friend never saw me, I was always tired, I just didn't care about anything else. All my spare time was invested into riding. I'm done with that. I drew the line.
Now, don't get me wrong..... we all still ride, we still do shows, we still compete in comps (worth the investment), and we still have plans for making a kickass video, website, shirts, etc.... we've just learned to do them at a slower pace. We're learning to control ourselves... keep everything (life / self responsibility) in prospective.
The train is bound to come in someday and if we're still at the station with the rest of you when it comes, we may just jump on. Until then, let's ride, have fun, keep it in prospective, and make it worth what it's ACTUALLY worth. Until then... keep it up and keep it straight

There is no way you can travel every weekend just to come back and break even or even less in your pocket. Is the money, travel, blood, sweat and tears worth the fame? It is when you come back with more than you started with. But I don't know any shows like that.... Don't get me wrong I am supporting stunt-riding and will continue to. I just won't drive half way around the country to unless it's worth it. Like Gorka said Risk and Reward.... If the Reward outweighs the Risk then Hell Yeah, but until then......
Just my
I dont think breaking even is a problem, not from a business standpoint. Most businesses fail in the first year, or at best dont get out of the red for the first 2. But putting yourself in a hole, with lil chance of getting yourself out, well roll the dice, play the cards and see how things come up. Or play it safe and dont gamble at all, just dont hate when someone else hits it big.
This is a crazy post but yet soooo much true stuff involved!!
I think all bords are getting boring!!!! I'm not to most of you guys calibere but i think the people that are REALLY working on their skills aren't on the bords, when the people that TALK about their skills are always on..... Bords became stupid, drama and no fun, we all were once friends having fun and just using the bord to keep in touch and talk about something new we tried/learned while we didn't want to pick up the phone... Now it's the "Chosen Few" that ride ALL the time and the others that POST all the time!
Some people dont really understand what others put into this sport/hobbie/career!!!! I myself can honestly say that riding takes a lot from you when you really put your HEART into it, not your mouth!!! When the weather is nice i will practice any chance i can, it takes a lot of money, it takes from my family (those that have one know what im talkin about), it will take from your relationship (at some point) and for what?? One thing i know now is that when you first get into this it's fun and that's it.... but when you start getting serious it becomes something way more, MONEY is the biggest!!!! once you are serious you put more money into this sport then you would a brand new car payment!!!!!
Friendships can get damaged, repairable but yet still damaged.... Friends will be lost over stuff that goes on, enemies and/or jealousy when be brought upon you for what you have worked so hard for! I could keep going on about this but i think most of you really feel what im talking about....
Bottom line is this.... i think someone else said it too, there isn't ONE person that has put 1000% into this sport that hasn't thought about pushing it aside or not doing anything for free or yet just quiting!!!! Now this doesn't mean that any of those will happen but that thought has popped up in your head!!! also a lil food for thought, "Until you are in another mans shoes, dont judge that other mans actions"
just my 2 cent!!!

how's that for not boring?
bri summed things up quite nicely...i will add a thought or three however...
nefarious, we HAVE ventured and will continue to do so, we just choose our expenditures (both monetarily as well as time wise) very carefully....what am I to gain by going to starboyz stuntfest besides 100 bucks in my pocket for ugliest kid award?? i go where i think i can gain, both monetarily and professionally, hence the only events i competed in all year were XSBA, a national championship that benefits my wallet (slightly) as well as my exposure in the industry.
riding is FUN, but practicing on a drag strip, parking lot, deadend road, doing the same thing over and over is BORING...so instead, i ride-the fiddy, the streets, the track, the trails, the ramps, etc...for FUN...it doesnt make sense to travel everywhere and spend money to get there to have 'fun', i'd rather play in my backyard.
as for riding to get paid, this has been going on this entire past summer in many camps across the nation. i, along with many others, will not travel great distances to break even. i travel for business purposes, to make money or a pad my resume, etc. albeit the friends i make along the way are great and i am a better man for having made them; but i am there for one reason only and that is to win and put myself in the green, again, both monetarily and professionally.
i keep the riding for fun in ALL the OTHER times that i am on my bike other than for business purposes....gorka is correct, and I too ride for dough...unless of course, i am playing with my friends in the woods, or visiting a riding buddy on somewhere in the U.S....
dont get me wrong, i still have fun competing and practicing now and again, but it is still a 'job' to be a 'pro' freestyler. just like pro hoop players start out playing for fun and still do play for fun, there is a time to separate business from pleasure-on game night, they are there to win and collect their loot. and for many riders across the country, it is time to do just that...collect the loot and win - then we can go play in the woods on our dirtbikes!!
see you guys on the US Freestyle Tour / NSRA Tour next year...till then, you know where i'll be!

well said nasty! i hear you on quite a few of the points you made. I, like many others here, am nowhere near the caliber of thew, gorka, kyle, darius, and others. But work at it every chance i get, whether or not i will ever get any $$ for riding, i will stick with it. I started out riding purely for the fun of it, and I hope that some day when i do call it quits, it will have been fun the whole time.
But I do agree with CR, if you are in a position to make money off this sport, and have really dedicated your time and efforts to it, then you should be compensated for what you do. Otherwise the sport will die out on a professional level because nobody has the time or money to be in it. You are running a business, your product is yourself and your skills. You dont see Bill Gates givin out software for free to everyone that wants it do ya??

this is a sport no matter what anyone says...and we all fell in love with it watching this sport in person or on video, hoping to be as good as those we watched. as we were hoping and watching those to be as good as those on their videos, true or not, they were making money on this sport. making money on this sport isnt bad, it is how you treat the sport with what amount of respect and for fellow riders. we do it as a hobby, but all hobbyies require money. as all sports, it does take money and a lot of dedication. with all of that some things do get sacrificed as nasty said. he is right on a few things, and he has been in this sport for a while. a lot fo people would love for this sport to make its way into the mainstream like freestyle motocross, or to be in the X-Games. and when that happens people make money...................................ect ect. ect.

Gorka, theres no need to explain yourself dude, you do what you do,and nobody should put that into question.Make some ends off this sport man.Roll with it.
Actually its just really, really, really awesome to have SL on here, and have this outlet I can go to anytime I want.Think way back when your pops was merely riding a husqvarna 125 watching "on any sunday"500 times in a row,I'm sure they wished they had something like SL way back when.Getting paid for stunting is just golden to me.What started out as a bunch of riders pissing off cops, getting busted, breaking bones, evolved into an actual "sport"now you get all that other stuff, and add the word "sport" to it.Gettin paid, what else is next?of course the pros should get ends for bustin it right?I think all the pioneers(excluding LVX
)and pros have paid the dues, and I think you guys really deserve some greenbacks for blowin my wig off everytime I download a new vid,or throw in a new dvd. Thanks guys is all I'm sayin. It wasnt until I hooked up with Outermost outa Albuquerque NM,that I realized that there ARE definately other riders that share the same passion for riding as me.not just cruising, revvin the **** outa brand new bikes, tryin to flex for the chicks at the local sonic. It goes waaaaay deeper than that to me.Get paid .....thats all i'm sayin

Lata,

Well said Bri, I know that we (vertical outlaws) have put countless dollars and time into this sport where it has come out of our own pockets.... but it has put us where we are now. I know that we had but 1 weekend off this summer due to shows and competitions... to the fact that a good majority of us are unable to make it to the nsra due to vacation time being used in the summer and money spent on all other trips. On the bright side though I do not regret one minute of this past summer... I know I would do it all over again, hopefully we will be able to do it next yr with a little more in return.
How much is everyone willing to sacrifice for greatness.... I know my breaking point... who else does?
look every one that stunts needs to look back at wher they startd and give props to how inspierd them.. if you guys want to make money move to the U.K they pay stunters good$$ but in the states it hassent come to that yet it might givin it the time ... on the outher hand films need to start giving up some real $$$$ to the peeps that trash ther bikes and spend years working on ther skill ..... But all said (A TRUE STUNTER STARTED ON THE STREETS AND NEEDS TO BE TRUE TO THE STREETS) that being said hit thev highway have fun ,dont forget wher you came from.......................
who fu(kin cares.
let the man do what he wants to do. if you like it, shut up and ride, if you dont, shut up and ride. all you people do is change this to dramalife.com and keep alot of people from aspiring to compete due to all the emotional garbage.

ok
man, this website is so fuc.king gay... everyone starts bashing untill.....they find out its gorka....then, its like, oh my god! i respect you and let me suck your coc.k,,,,the problem with this sport is that everyone thinks the sport owes them.... if anything ever comes from this **** it wont be for a long time!... so while you spend your entire savings account traveling to ride wheelies and get drunk you are slowly and surely going broke..lets all go back to when we would just ride for the fun of it... Get together with your friends and ride without video cameras... Everyone is trying to figure out a way to make money off this sport... Damn! there's a new facking t-shirt company every fukin week! this site used to be so great! it held the entire community together.. i mean, you could travel accross the country and stay with some guy you talked with over STUNTLIFE.COM!!! now it is nothing but B.S. and drama... Keep your jobs! ride with your friends when you can and then maybe one day this **** will all take off and then you'll have your chance to shine... it takes money to make money and most "stunters" are broke *** high school fuc.k ups...just go back to when this used to be fun...and not a business...
so now everyone fuc.king bash me too.....
so now everyone fuc.king bash me too.....
nick u know u luv u and i agree that we need to keep havin fun and not forget where we came from but i also think that we need to push the sport. this sport is not going to go anywhere is people don't start looking more professional and getting real sponsors. yes you are right it might take a while for this sport to take off but it's not going to do it while everyone is riding in some parking lot and that's it. make video's sell t-shirts and do whatever you have to do to keep a few dollars in your pockets while you are trying to make this sport great. if you don't feel like it's worth it to be broke to do something you love then i don't know. and yes i know you were traveling for 2 years before this even took off so i know u got burnt out early but i hope that you take your time off and get the feel for it again and come back on the road again cause they were some of the best times ever.
DON'T FORGET WHERE YOUR FROM BUT KNOW WHERE YOU HAVE TO GO.
the word of the day kids is PROFESSIONAL.

he seems to say stuff like that often around here.
