how does gearing affect speedo accuracy?

i forget how gearing will effect speedo accuracy (for those run by the trans). i know the speedo runs high to begin with so i didn't think that 1 down in the front would make it any worse but i wasn't sure...

yup one down in the front increases your indicated speed 6.2%
one up in the rear increases indicated speed 2.2%

this is the math on honda/suzuki600cc bikes. Yammis are geared a little steeper and kawasaki is geared slightly lower.(not much) 1000cc bikes are geared way lower and have bigger speed differentials when you gear them.

i double check mine by going on the interstate at 60mph and clocking how many seconds it takes to do 1 mile. its more accurate to measure 3 miles to 3 minutes.

example - 70 seconds per mile. Divide 60/70 you got a 16.6% higher speed than indicated.

If you dont want the cops clock you faster than 75mph (actual), multiply 75*1.166 = 87mph indicated.

87mph indicated = 75mph actual

I have my gsxr -1 +2 and the speedo is so f'n off. I never use it anyway I have glanced into peoples cars when I ride on the highway and tried to gauge it. It says like 95-100 at like 70mph. Is funny b/c I have gotton the speedo to show 207 mph and I know I was really only doing like 160 mph. This is gauging from my race experience knowing that the biggest strait away down at pueblo we let off around 170mph. So I would compare it as a little less than that. when my speedo was showing 207mph. i should get a picture of it on a tank cam video. It would look like my bike had like 300hp if you looked at the speedo fly up to 200.

im -1 +4 and my speed always says 0!!! haha i unplugged that ****...it stops the milage counter too...but who cares, FTP!!!

just go by your RPMs...for example, if ur RPM is at 7, then pull next to a car and read their speed... like when my RPM is at 7 in 6th gear, im goin 80mph

The faster you go, the more the speedo gets thrown off. But who needs one anyways, all a speedo does is depreciate the value of your bike when you rack up mileage.
