Welding Frames: ER4043 or ER5356

I know theres gotta be some experienced welders here. What would be a preferable rod for welding up a motor mount?

ER4043, a good general purpose Aluminum filler with silicone additives for improved flow and reduces cracking. Bright weld finish.

ER5356, a good general purpose Aluminum filler with higher shear strength than 4043 and better resistance to corrosion. Recommended for use with series 5000 aluminum.

I'm not a welder but I would assume the er5356

i use 4043 and dont have a problem and Ive welded some pretty high impact stuff, never had a problem with it so Ive never tried using anything else since it worked so nicely.

I cant weld, so I dont, I fix PC's and pay people to fix my bike MOST of the time ( did do a jet kit install last summer, installed an exhaust, did a custom fender elim on my bike) But for the msot part, if i dont know, i let someone else do it and show me how to do it so i can do it in the furture.

Re: Welding Frames: ER4043 or ER5356

what you want to do is drill 2 holes one at the start of the crack and one at the end of it. then take a grinder and V out the crack so when you weld it you get the most penetration.Iv had to weld so many cracks in buckets in back hoes and and dump buckets. And if you dont drill the holes the crack will continue under the weld and spreed hope this helps.

Its a sick cage. It started to get loose. tightened it up.. got loose again..i think it started from lowsiding the **** out of a circle while cage was loose and after i tightened it back down it was already cracked and just the stress from little drops broke it off..

Re: Welding Frames: ER4043 or ER5356

I weld frames and radiators occasionally... And weld at work.. I use both. 4043 on radiators and 5356 on frames.. I just fixed a 05 636 and a 06 RR both with bad frame cracks.. Also did my 03 636. I heat treated mine. Other two I didn't. Heat treat worked for me. Have hardness testers at work an ya.. Do work.
I heard the frames are a 7000 series alloy.. I don't know for sure. But I always use 6000 series alloys to brace it. Pics coming soon.

Depending who you work for is a big factor if it is fun or not, production welding like handrails and crap like that kinda sucks but always needed. its always handy to know.
