Double amputee wants to ride again.
Double amputee wants to ride again.
Someone I know lost his complete right leg and his right arm from just below the right shoulder.
He's still getting all of his prosthetic stuff together and I don't really have all the details on that yet.
I understand that ultimately it's going to be a process of trial and error and you also can't recommend too much without understanding what the function of the prosthetic limb will be like, but if anyone knows of any links to similar riders or has good ideas it's all going to be helpful.

Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
the arm will be harder to compensate for than the leg.....with legs missing you can always get air shifters and he can use hand brake for the rear brake. But with his right arm missing he will not be able to use the throttle or front brake. He could always rig something to put the throttle on the left side and use the clutch but would have to come up with some system to use the brakes
my suggestion would be use a thumb throttle on the left bar that way he can use the clutch and throttle at the same time easier. Then run a hand brake on that side too. I am not sure of the function of his prostetic but im sure he will not have much dexterity or mobility with it so using anything on the right bar is prob out of the question. You might be able to retain the rear brake on the foot peg

Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
I actually have a friend who has no use of his left arm at all. I dont know how the throttle would work but he rigged his bike so the clutch signals high beams were all on the right side. Used velcro on his glove and handlebar to keep his left arm in place. This guy is running low 2's at TWS. (its a track)
NOt sure on prostetics but good luck

Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
a friend of mine lost his right arm in a bike crash a while back. he still rides now. he has got his throttle, front brake and clutch all on the left side and has trained himself to co-ordinate it all together. busts out some small wheelies and does track days still. he doesnt even bother connecting his right arm anymore. just rides round with 1 arm.
Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
there is a guy on www.kiwibiker.co.nz called "One armed bandit" he stunts and races a gixxer and has only has a right arm
Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
Hopefully he finds a way to ride again. With enough money, anything is possible... just look at the one-handed 360 controller. If someone can do that with electronics, just think what someone could come up with with throttle, brake, and clutch hook-ups.
Here is a link to the one-handed 360 controller.... http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/17/b...60-controller/

Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
initially i thought, no way not possible, but where there's a will there's a way. so no right arm or right leg would mean no throttle, front brake or rear brake. i was thinkin he could use a thumb throttle on the left side, with a one finger clutch and handbrake(set-up just like stunting), except for link the hand brake to both the rear and front brakes.
out of neccesity(my only vehicle) i had to drive a stick with a broke leg. i know that doesn't even come close to this, but it made me realize that with enough willpower, most things are possible.
good luck to your friend, i'll pray for him.

Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
ANYTHING can be done if you have enough drive and patience....losing a left leg isn't **** in the grand scheme of things, we don't shift very much, not being able to feel your pegs isn't the greatest thing in the world.....i don't know about an arm however....that will be really hard, i've seen guys from the xtremity games( x-games for amputees) riding dirt bikes and jumping with one arm...

Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
Stuntposer... pretty much above the knee down his right leg is gone and he has a prostetic, one for stunting and one for general use. I hope, and pray one day he will get back on a bike cause when I was growing up I would watch him stunt, and he was one of my biggest influences in getting into stunt riding... now when I go out to stunt, he's not on a street bike anymore... just a quad, but it's taken him months just to get to that point. Not only do you lose your leg from above the knee down, he had his back transfused together... let's say it's a miracle he's alive let alone back at stunting. **** affects me just sitting here typing about it... he was gonna be pro you could count on it.

I was thinking maybe put everything on the left clip-on. Thumb throttle, ez- pull clutch lever, and the front brake master cylinder.
I don't think learning to use the rear brake with the prosthetic will be an issue. It may be important for a stunter, but for a guy just wanting to ride again I don't think it will be a problem.
Maybe thumb throttle and front brake on the left side and a fab'd clutch lever on the right side that's pushed rather than pulled. It seems as if that might work.
Re: Double amputee wants to ride again.
I sold bikes for 5 years here in San Diego.
One of my good customers was a Marine Sniper that lost his right hand in Iraq. He got all set up on an 07 GSXR750. Moved all the hand controls over to the left. On the right side is a socket and his arm prosthetic is a ball joint that pops into it.
The clutch front brake setup is similar to what you'd see on a stunt bike with a front brake rear brake on one hand setup.
A set of woodcraft clip ons was used and slimmer supermoto electronics (starter, horn turn signal etc.) were all moved to the left bar.
As far as the rear brake goes, he may still be able to use a traditional setup depending on what setup he gets for a prosthetic.
If your friend needs specifics as far as the brands my customer used send me a PM with contact info and I'll try to get ahold of him for you.

Let me get his contact info and PM it to you so the information isn't going through a third party.
