Re: thoughts on video camera's for shooting vids
I remember reading that the HV30's equivalent with an internal hd recorded using a weird compression format that is very computer intensive to de-encode and use, and not all editing programs are even compatible with it.
I'm not sure if all camcorders with internal hds do that, but if so, I'd stay away from it.
You really should see if you even enjoy editing before you drop a lot on a camera for no reason. Also, if you're looking to record yourself a lot, you might want a camera that is easy for anyone to use.
I'm pretty sure the new Hot Sauce vids all use an HV30, which is a fantastic little camera for the price (I paid around 800-900 for mine new).

im pretty computer oreinted, ive edited some stuff using corel video studio with filmed with a handy cam, and its not to bad just a bit time consuming.

vegas video's good if you are just getting into making vids, thats what I learned on. But I jumped up to Adobe premiere cs3 now, way cooler but a little more complicated.

One of the most important things to look at is the overall size of the input sensors (either CCD or CMOS)...try and buy the cam with the largest inputs you can afford (for 1k you will more than likely wind up with fairly small sensors)...for the level of cam you are looking to buy this will make a huge difference in terms of color, light sensitivity, and overall image quality...
And then there is the hv30...a frankenstein kind of a cam. It has one enormous 2.7" CMOS sensor...and records comparable images to the XH-A1 which costs a few grand more. Hell, I have seen some HV30 footage that was matched in post with an HVX and it was very hard to tell the difference between the two...
Now, the problem with a CMOS sensor and action sports is that they record with a rolling shutter, the image is imprinted to the sensor from bottom left to top right of the image, whereas a CCD imprints the image all at once...you can run into instances where your subject (the bike) will stretch across the screen slightly...some people don't worry about it too much but it bugs the crap out of me lol...
*I just re-read this and holy **** I am a nerd!!!
*Hope this helps though...
