F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
I was at the little spot by my house tonight on my newly acquired F4i.
I tested idle with the ram air tubes on and then with one on and the other side taped off.
i switched about four times in an hour and a half. It felt better on idle (harder & smoother) to me with them on, and felt not as sluggish just riding with them on too.
I know of at least 3 people I ride with that have one side taped off, I dont see the hype?
I remember seeing some posts a while back where Borne was swearing that leaving the ram air tubes on pulls better idle and overall runs better.
anyway Im gonna test it again tomorrow, just wanted to get some opinions on the matter from those who HAVE TRIED BOTH.

Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
I think the only reason peolpe tape the air box, is because aftermarket filters like K&N flow TONS more air, and kill low end torque..
if you run a stock filter, it shouldn't make much difference how you run it..
but with a K&N, its better to tape one side..
Personally, I have all my wires shoved in the left side of my air box, and my right side taped off lol..
I personally don't notice any difference with the ram air tubes on, or taped air box, or no tape..
But I still tape my air box! And I also have 2 plates welded in my cut exhaust.. quiets the exhaust down, and should increase back pressure a lil bit, more like stock

Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
Ive been wanting to try that on my cut leo vinci for a while now but just never got around to it. good to hear that it works pretty well
Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
i havent noticed a difference either, but my f4i pulls like a locomotive for some reason no matter what. if you look at the design of a ram air tube on any sport bike it "appears" to boost airflow, since the opening is large, then small, then large again like a jet engine almost
Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
i have both my ducts on....stock air filter....switch back and forth between 2 exhaust....one feels like there is too much back pressure....the other not enough....never ridden it with the ducts off but my idle is jumpy all the time

Have u checked for codes? Sounds like a bad map sensor or the lil hose came off the bottom of it.

As for this topic, my mate jase has always run his ram air tubes, said the bike runs like **** if he takes them off
Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
When I rode f4i I tried taping the airbox and didnt notice any difference. But with the Ram Air Tubes I felt tons of difference in lowend torque, how it pulled on idle and I got less bog...

Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
the ducts look ugly and get in the way. That's the only difference.
6" of tubing that is the same diameter as the box openings will not change airflow to increase low end torque. Increasing or decreasing intake flow doesn't affect torque like increasing or decreasing exhaust flow.
Tubes are made for 2 reasons on bikes. You can look this up on any manufacturers design reasons: They lower engine noise (big part of it) and increase air pressure via ram air at higher speeds. Low speeds will have no effect because the motor will still be "drawing" air in verses being forced.

i think this fellah hit the nail on the head, i got my tubes out, exhaust cut shorty and the balance tubes are MIA. no real idle issues but had to put a silencer tip in to decrease angry phone calls from neighbours. the idea about the map sensor may be true.....my bike just runs like **** in 4-5th gear at cruising speeds and that's a back pressure problem....running your wires through the air ducts shouldn't choke off the intake air, most stunters are doin wheelies at low speeds anyways
i think i'm putting my wires through the duct too and re-packing the tailpipe... Last edited by poni; Sep 22, 2008 at 12:00 PM.
Re: F4i---Tape Airbox VS. Ram Air Tubes
i have a stock 08 r6 exhaust and with or without one side covered, the bike bogs real bad. did the same think with a cut down 2 brothers also... dunno what the problem is. couldit be a bad map since my idle is a little jumpy? thing pulls like ****
but not i bent a piece of sheetmetal to cover the right side and i relocated my ignition there so its super out of the way. might aswell keep it lol

and i run stock filter w/ no ducts just open box and dont have any problems
