How to Replace Fork Seals

So I blew the fork seals in my 954 and I realy don't want to pay to have them put in. I was just curiouse as to whether or not it is difficult, and if it isn't to difficult, how you would go about doing so. Also how long do I have before they need to be replaced? Any comments would be extremely helpful.

Re: How to Replace Fork Seals

if theyre blown they need to be replaced NOW. to do it yourself i dont recomend. your suspension is not something u wanna be ******* around with when u dont know what youre doing. plus u need special tools to do the seals, some ppl make their own but, im not about ghetto riggin **** on my forks. i bring em to a dealer or mechanic and have em done, cost me 60 dollars per fork off the bike.

Re: How to Replace Fork Seals

it's not hard, but if your not mechanical, i wouldn't attempt it. the only special tool you will need is a fork seal driver and a special(extended) allen socket. if your gonna do it take omr's advice and get a manual, then just follow the instructions. pm me if you run into any snags, i'll be glad to help.

took me 30 minutes a side, and a $5 piece of PVC from home depot

I don't know how YOUR shop does thing, but our honda shop around here, are no better then me doing it..

Hell, I went in there 2 weeks ago to ask about getting a steering steam bearing race pressed into my frame...
The guy that runs the place said "man you don't want us to do your bearings, we don't use the steering bearing press.. We just use a socket and a hammer, hell all we do is basic maintenence and tire changes"

Hell just drop the wheel, cut the zip ties that hold your fender on unbolt your calipers, take your clip-on's off and/or upper tripple if you have clip-on's under

unbolt just the 2 bolts for each fork leg, they are off

I guess it probably took more then 30 minutes, but definitely no more then 2 hours for both..

And I work for $10 a hour for friends :YEAH

yea J, your are doing mine too, and I made a brass tool for them and everything on the lathe.... I never got mine to seal properly and I sold the bike.... So, I went ahead and got these now on the new bike before the fact, and all is well!
I anticipate no problems with these! At least these are supposed to help out...

Wow, I never thought of that before?? That would be a one in a million chance, but sounds like an "only me" story too!

they are velcroed pretty solid, but my friend does zip tie his on the top and bottom instead of just on the top only like mine are.

Maybe I should put a zip tie on the bottom too....

Anytime

My tool I use is kinda ghetto.. the pvc I got was a little to big for hte f4i forks.. But I cut slits into the end of the pvc, and use a hose clamp to pinch it together, and it fits my f4i forks puuuurfect :YEAH

I was always scurred of working on forks FOREVER... spent over a year on my f4i with blown seals..
Then I threw new ones in, and now I've been telling everyone around here I can change seals CHEAP!

standard forks are one thing... I can change standard fork seals in my sleep... never attempted inverted though and I'm in need of doing the ones on my F4i (954 forks)... is there a trick to inverted forks to seperate the leg?

I'm just taking a WILD guess... but I'd ASSUME they are the same..

I don't see why they would be build any different, except maybe SMALL changes (like maybe you dont need to losen the nut on bottom or something)

either way, before I do attempt inverted forks, imma read in a manual with inverted forks to make sure it appears the same

Re: How to Replace Fork Seals

Inverted's not that big a deal... never did standard but did have done many sets of inverted. Some of them you need special tools, others you don't. I know on 04-05 gixxers you need a few things, I fabbed the tools up in less than an hour. 954 is pretty straight foward though.. nothing I would consider a special tool, other than snap ring pliers, socket, and seal drivers, basically the same **** you need for any forks...

So, as I'm putting new seals in, is there anything I can do that will make them last longer (other than slamming them down....)???

Make sure you use OEM seals!!!!!!!

Make sure not to get ANY knicks or dings in the fork tube AT ALLLLLL!!!

Make sure to clean ALL dirt/debris from the fork tube.. make sure it is 1000000% perfectly clean
