Re: ACL tear! F**ked Again
kj, that is a GOOD POST RIGHT THERE vvvvv Im not the creator of this thread but THANKX im saving this thread to my favorites.. ill never know when i might need any of your guys advice
Re: ACL tear! F**ked Again
LOL...I wish mine even had a good story...I severed my ACL falling off a chair that I was standing on...what a friggin goon I am...LESSON LEARNED! Don't try and stand on the arms of a weak azz chair...IT WILL BREAK!
The ACL is a ligiment in your knee that basically keeps the lower part of your leg from going to far forward (helps keep your upper/lower leg aligned). The ACL works together with the MCL. You can live without your ACL, however, you are going to be more prone to miniscus (sp?) injuries when active. I don't know a lot about MCL injuries as I didn't hurt that...
All that said, you have to understand that stunt riding has an increased risk of injury to yourself. You just have to do everything that you can to make sure that you are as protected as possible. Unfortunately, there are many people that don't try and protect themselves until AFTER they have gotten injured already. Take it from those that have been there...it ain't fun to be sidelined because you have an injury that could have been prevented or lessened because of proper gear.
Don't let the fear get to you however. If you go through life worring about getting hurt, you are more likely to end up sitting in front of the TV and not leaving the house!

Re: ACL tear! F**ked Again
Ok...
I did the same thing... got an injury, didn't get it checked out, then injured it again about 6mths later... both being violent hyperextensions w/ twisting (circle highsides).
TEACH had almost the exact same injury as well and thankfully, I followed his advice.
I went to the doctor (I knew this time that I did something REALLY bad)... I destroyed both lateral & medial meniscus and had NOTHING left of my ACL.
The doctor was VERY positive suggested I get the cadaver alograft... they stitched up the menisci, and scraped the bottom of my femur because during the course of the 2 seperate injuries I had fractured the very bottom of it... they said calcium (arthritis) had already begun to develop.
That was March 8th of last year... as of right now (almost 1yr), I almost forget sometimes that there was anything wrong w/ it. Only thing i notice now is i cannot naturally hyperextend my knee as far as the other. But even that is gettin better and better each week.
They say that a full COMPLETE recovery takes up to 12-18mths.
I did ALL of the PT and did wear the brace for a while, but they are limiting (and will **** up your bike)... but you really only need them until your graft is fully healed and your muscles are back to strength.
My advice... get a GOOD ORTHO/KNEE SPECIALIST, get the surgery, CADEVER is only way to go... and DO ALL THE PT even though it sucks and you feel like a dick.
Then be really really really carefull for the 1st 6mths... ie: WEAR THE STUPID BRACE! (even though it sucks and you feel like a dick).
One more note on the cadaver graft... my understanding is that once fully healed your new ACL will be 2x as big and strong as the original (depending on which cadaver ligament they use, I believe I had the Tibialis graft).
Good luck.... keep us updated!

I second kj's post! The PT sucks, but go through it. I never had problems with messing up my bike with the brace as I always wore (and still do) under my pants. The airport doesn't like it...I know that!
I had the same procedure with the cadaver graft. I don't recall the Doc ever telling me what exact tissue they used, but sounds like the same thing. I also tore up my miniscus (sp?) and was told the same thing about the arthritis in the knee. Fracture of the tibia is pretty common with these injuries from what I was told as well. That is what the ER treated me for when I made my visit. Then, after the ortho visits and battery of MRIs, yup...they seemed to have forgotten about the fracture and never mentioned it again.
Re: ACL tear! F**ked Again
I was back riding the moment that I could bend my knee enough again...about 3 or 4 months I think.
Re: ACL tear! F**ked Again
You aren't kidding...I think that he told me that because he is a doctor and is over protective. My PT told me that I should never ride a motorcycle because if I get hit by a car I could mess up my knee again. I told her that I would be worried about more than my knee if I got hit by a car!

Re: ACL tear! F**ked Again
dude Ryan S. is back on his bike after loosing almost half of his leg!! Read some of his posts and feed off of his positivity. I don't have any sort of injury to battle with...yet. but even so reading what he has to say is pretty damn insperational.
I would just get the surgery (if you have insurance) and suck it up. You don't want to be rockin a cane or anything like that by the time your 45. either way, good luck and pop some pain killers for me
