chain length help please

chain length help please

hey fellas i think i might have screwed up but just ordered chain and sprockets for my friends 2003 r6.. the set up is 16/55. and a 120 link chain . .is it gonna be too short??. should i get 130 link. .or any way to add links

120 should be fine, can always add or take links out, cheaper to take them out though....:YEAH

how difficult to add ??will it affect the strength of the chain?

i just got a +10 rear sprocket with a -1 front and 130 link chain and i cut off almost 7 or 8 inches of chain

Yeah, you will be pulling out probably 3 or 4 links easy....pull the axle all the way out and put the chain on and see how many links are left over then pop them out. I got a chain breaker from pro circuit and it made life easy!

14/54 530 pitch on a kawi = 118 links

that's down one up fourteen.. just for a point of reference.

just get a 130 link chain n be done with it, it never hurts to have extra links laying around.

i run a 16/60 and it took 118 links

according to the people at vortex...this is how it goes.


Down one in front....no change...more than one then you count to add length

Up any in back is one link per one tooth added needed to add to chain.


Therefore....I have a f4i for example. Stock is 16/46 with 106 link chain. if i go down one and up ten....15/56...chain length should be ten added to stock length..which is 116. if I went to a 58 it would have been 118....60 120

yeah not sure how accurate it is or if ius sorta a guidline where to start....just what they said...seemed to work for me though.


By the way.. what chain you runnin..is it old or hella stretched?

this is the 3rd chain i've put on a 60t rear and each time i've cut between 4 and 6 links out....

and i've been changing sprockets since '95

1st bike was -1/+2

1995 zx6r.... was the 1st year they came out... ahhhhh the days...

i mean it makes sense that every tooth is gonna need a link right ?

but then again not every tooth is gonna be in contact with tha chain so on link every two teeth maybe...hhmm ...

im pretty sure the last two chains i got were 130 and i usually cut a couple links out
