Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

A buddy is wanting to buy a clutch master cylinder off a 99 zx7r. Anyone ever use this for a rear handrake? Would it even work

Re: Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

it would work but if it doesn't have a remote res then it gets in the way of the clutch .....

tell him he would be better off with almost any front brake master but the radial masters are better then the regular ones

Re: Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

it wouldn't work. they are way too small of a piston. the piston appears to be 10mm or so in diameter and they also run mineral oil instead of brake fluid in those masters. if you put brake fluid into those masters it will destroy the seals.

Re: Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

teach ran a zx7 clutch master on his 636 back in the day...it will work, but any a 900/929/954 front brake master is ur best cheap bet, then any radial front master is ur best bet, and ur most super gangster option is the brembo 16x18 master.....good luck

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by a remote reservoir? Does the Brembo clutch master have a remote res?

it just means the res is not part of the master ,you ever see a clutch master on a bike that doesn't have the rubber hose running to the little plastic res ? it has the square part connected to the master where you put the fluid in , that would make a bad handbrake because the connected square part of the master would get in the way of the clutch

i used to use the radial mount off the zx14 but it was hard to get a lever if I broke it
I like my levers to be stock

Re: Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

I had a cbr1k clutch on my f4i. It worked but not as good as the radials I've used

The Cbr1k I had used brake fluid. I've never heard of one using anything but...

Re: Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

I use a brembo 18mm radial clutch master at the moment, works perfect... no leaking seals or anything

Re: Anyone use a clutch master for a handbrake?

its mostly the magura hydraulic clutches that run the mineral oil, most of the OEM jap bikes run brake fluid. Check the reservoir cap on your master it will tell you what to put in it. My KTM uses mineral oil..

ah, looking in the manual this is true....maybe it's the rc51 that used mineral oil. i know i've changed mineral oil on a honda clutch master before though.

that sir, i have no idea. seemed odd to me and easier for the techs if they just used the same fluids (dot 4 on both) but whatever.

also, the piston size on 1000rr clutch master is 12.5mm in diameter for anyone that wants to know.
