F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
I had a nice slow 1st gear wheelie happening and then it started to turn into a circle. No big deal, this has happened to me a couple of times so im learning how to react when the bike tips into a circle wheelie. Anyway, by about 90 degrees, the bike falls to the left and feels like it wants to pancake so i put my left foot down to try and correct this but simultaneously the front wheel has dropped so the wheelie is coming to an end.
By this stage im heading off the road into some sand dunes and i straighten the bike as much as i can and then jump off the back. I jog along while the bike lands and then falls over in the sand. No big deal right? WRONG. The way the bike has landed, the airbox is lower than the sump and oil is filling up the airbox and the top of my engine
(No wonder it wouldnt start!)
Long story short, we cleaned out as much oil as possible by removing the airbox and spark plugs. After spraying some carby cleaner into the throttle bodies, the bike fired up but is pumping out more smoke than the Canberra bushfires. I'm taking it for a ride tomorow to clean out the engine more and i'll also be taking it apart again to spray some more carby cleaner through the engine to try and remove any more oil traces. Then i'll put new spark plugs in.
My question: has this happened to you guys before and if so, how did you fix it? Any other tips or suggestions?

Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
It has happened to many people on here before.... do the kleen air mod ...and it wont be so bad next tiime...you wont have to plull the plugs etc. It'll just smoke for awhile after being near upside down
Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
correct me if im wrong, but i was under the impression there was no mod for a f4i, and it only happens if it lays over on the left side, just pick it up as soon as it falls and you be ok

Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
Legends :D Thanks very much guys! I'll be doing this mod asap. Hopefully i havent caused any long term damage. Then bike runs without any unusual noises but just blows smoke like a crackwhore.
Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
Went for a ride today...no more smoke :D
However...Ive noticed another problem which has gotten a little worse since the crash. Mid-wheelie, behind balance point, the bike feels like its spluttering! It jerks around very slightly but enough to unsettle the entire wheelie. It only happens when im decelerating the wheelie or just at that point when im neither accelerating nor decelerating...just maintaining the wheelie. Also, it only happens when ive let off the rear brake...if im riding the brake (with a bit of force) i dont notice it.
This is REALLY giving me the ***** cos it happens everytime and i cant hold it behind balance point with any sense of stability. Its almost like its not fueling properly!! It happened occasionally before the crash but now its every wheelie
What do you think is going on?

Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
did you change your plugs like you said you were gonna ?
that and a loose rear shock setting or a loose chain will make it feel even worse

Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
Nope, it was a public holiday today so no shops open
Plugs will be changed tomorow. Ive played with the chain slackness and no matter how tight, it still happens. I doubt its a rear shock issue cos even if i keep the bike at a stable height, it will twitch like its not getting enough fuel...
Kinda worrying given that this happened before my crash too

Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
the plugs will probably fix it...
fyi a nice stiff rear shock is better for every thing except racing ,stoppies come up better and wheelies are smoother

Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
Fingers crossed! Its just strange that it had this twitchy feeling before i fouled the plugs... oh well, the process of elimination has begun...
Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
since were talking about spark plugs i've got a question:
if you turn the motor off when the cylinders are all performing their different jobs at different times, i.e. intake, compression, combustion, exhaust...
how come when one of the cylinders is at tdc of its compression stroke and you remove the plug you dont hear a little pssst. shouldnt you hear a pssst? also you would wonder this with trucks also because i've had to put my number 1 cylinder at tdc to change my timing gears and chain and then when i removed the plug i didnt hear a "pssst" sound. with over 200 psi of pressure in these bikes you figure otherwise eh?

SO My Guess is ..... By The Time You go to remove the Plug...the Pressure has "leaked off"
Re: F4i airbox filled up with oil!!
I think its because of "Blowby" That cilinder doesn't hold that compression forever...it starts to "leak off" Probably past the split in the Piston rings first ...then through valve guides or whatever.....

yep ExtrememAcres has it..
also when the vehicle is running there is oil being splashed around so that helps seal up the rings and the fact that the piston and rings expand when they are hot and that helps too but ya once you turn the motor off the compression will leak down faster then you could get a plug out of it
