stunt chain pitch and length
i probly wouldnt be posting this if the search feature worked but anyways...
i got an 01 f4i wit stock chain(525 pitch and i think 108 links) and sprockets(16t in front, 46t in back), im starting to learn to stunt and want to know if i should stay with stock chain pitch?
also im thinkin of goin down 1 in the front(15t) and up 2 or 3 in the back (about 48t), would i need a longer or shorter chain?
any suggestions or personal set-ups would be helpful thanx

Re: stunt chain pitch and length
The 530 is stronger than the 525, but also more expensive. On my R1 I run 530 cause of all the power it has. On my stuntbike I'm going to run the same 530. Some go with 525 and some even go with 520. for me on a stuntbike I want the strongest chain possible.
Re: stunt chain pitch and length
most people switch to 520, i did. 520 will be plenty of strength for anything. if you look at tensil strength between 520 adn 530 you will see that 520 is way more than what will be put to the chain on a 600 or 1000cc bike. it also depends on your chain. a cheap 530 is weaker than a good 520.
i would just say keep the stock pitch. 525 is fine and won't hurt anything. if you want to keep the stock chain length then you can go 1 down in the front adn 2 up in the rear and that will allow you to keep stock chain length.
here's the thing, if you have any ammount of miles on your sprockets/chain then you always replace sprockets with a new chain together, so don't be cheap and use your old junk chain on new sprockets, it will wear the sprockets out super fast since the chain is already stretched out. that being said, you don't need to keep the stock length if you are replacing them all...just get whatever gearing combo you wish. and FYI, a lot of stunt gearing sprockets are offered more in 520. i've never had a problem finding 520 pitch sprockets in stock with stunt gearing.
Re: stunt chain pitch and length
Go with a good chain and you can run a 520 with no problems. As for the sprocket size. Stick with close to stock or stock. Running big gears isn't conducive for quick learning.
Re: stunt chain pitch and length
converting to 520 pitch only consists of changing the sprockets and chain to 520 pitch right?
im gonna go with vortex sprockets, but what kind of chain is good?
i was gonna get a DID or EK chain
how many links would i need for 15 in front and 48 in back, just 120 link?
and my speedo is gonna read wrong right? so is there an easy way to fix that?

Re: stunt chain pitch and length
Just do some research on chains and find one with a tensile strength to suit your needs. Your speedo will be off. The faster you're going the more "error" it will read. I'm not sure how to go about recalibrating it or whatever.

But to answer all your questions
YES chain and sprockets have to match and thats it.
Vortex is fine for just learning (the teeth tend to break) Any chain will do
You cut the chain to size but 120 is fine for up to +8 int the rear I believe
Your speedo will read wrong, there are speedo healers but thats a waste of money.
This thread might help as you can see a LOT of other people have asked these questions already all you have to do is look.

Re: stunt chain pitch and length
ya, most of the time i just buy a 120 link chain and cut it to length. for some reason the 120link chain is cheaper than a specific number at the bike shop so i just do that.
both DID and EK make good chains. i run a non-oring chain, lube it often adn replace it frequently. The alternative is going for an o-ring or x-ring, but they cost quite a bit more.
and yes, you only change the sprockets and chain to do a 520 conversion.
if the speedo really makes a difference, you can use this:

the stock speedo is actually quite a bit off from the factory anyways. most of us don't really care but i do know some people that have used that to make it normal again.

Re: stunt chain pitch and length
gearedsteelproducts.com can hook you up with good chains and steel sprockets that have seemed to last forever for me with lubing the chain like you should.
Phil @ moto-heaven.com can give you any info you need as far as speedometer correction, carries chains, and has some damn fine sprockets as well. Talk to him, he can tell ya what might work out best for you.
Vortex is decent stuff, but not as stunt oriented as the above two, so support your sport and hit those guys up.
