Learning Rear Brake Debate

So a friend and I got in a small debate this weekend about learning the rear brake and I wanted to get your guys opinion. He wants to get a rear hand brake on his bike and start learning how to work it when he hasn't really learned the foot brake %100 yet because he feels why bother with the foot when you are going to eventually need a hand brake to learn the technical tricks. I feel you need to have the foot brake down first cuz there are many tricks that the foot brake does come in handy and just because it is, in a way, how the learning prosess is. I just feel the way to become great is to go through the learning process the ways the pros do and that is to master the foot brake before you mess with the hand brake. Am I right or wrong? What do you guys think?

Re: Learning Rear Brake Debate

gotta learn the foot brake first man its just the prinicples of control and the ability to get used to and have it become second nature. Plus if he never learns to utilize the rear brake kiss any no hander tricks good bye not to mention various others......bogus man hes tryin to short himself but from what i have heard its harder to use a hand brake then people think....in the end you still need the ***** to dip it back...ya know?

Re: Learning Rear Brake Debate

judging by your avatar you dont need to use the brake yet?

Cereally though...

it doesnt matter Id tell him to learn the HB first and watch him bust his *** a bunch of times, either way though hes probly gonna fall.

I think HB wheelies are a little easier since your not straining your arms like you are in a staggared stance less arm pump means you can concentrate more on your technique...

Re: Learning Rear Brake Debate

HAHAHA! I frickin knew every1 would agree with me. Right on guys. Oh and aaronwilliams you are very right but lately the brake has come in handy for im gettin my tail to about 3 - 4 inches off the ground now, that pic is a lil old. I hope all is well in Iraq with ya bro, Ive has a few friends get injured over there so my heart is with ya playa! And for those who care I tried stand-ups today for the 1st time and all I can say is WOW! I have never had an easier time walking a wheelie and the control is amazing. The longest sit down i've ever done was a lil over a 1/4 mile and i walked a stand-up for 1/2 today and it was about my 8th try. Its a lil sloppy cuz im 6'3" so gettin my left leg straight is trippy for me cuz when I lock it straight the wind screen rest about even with my bottum ribs but I have so much more control when I get it locked. Just need more practice. Im standing staggered but if you guys have any tips please let me know. Oh and i'd split the debate bet money with you guys but it was only $5.

Re: Learning Rear Brake Debate

ya, you can learn just a handbrake if you want, but if you don't have balance and control, learninga handbrake is going to be a lot harder.

also, if you aren't doing seat stander, using a handbrake is WAY harder beause you have 1 finger on clutch and 1 finger on hb so it's harder to hold on (in staggerd stance).

ur friend is an idiot. tell him to learn how to ride a bike first, then worry about the rest of the ****. he could ride for YEARS on a footbrake and still not run out of tricks to learn.

learn footbrake first!!!! i rode without a hanbrake for the first year i started stunnin imo learning footbrake is the first and foremost thing to do, then handbrake will come natrually after getting over the fear of catching it with the HB

Re: Learning Rear Brake Debate

You can learn it however you want, neither is harder than the other, the feathering or on/off use of the brake is the same whether you are using the foot or HB.

The only thing you need the footbrake for in a wheelie is no handers. Otherwise you can just use the HB for everything else. Learning brake control and to balance your bike using the brake can be done with either. Just let the guy do whatever he wants.
