Just like Photoshop, it's almost the most widely used software in his class,
hence you'll find tons of advanced users
having developed plugins with special effects and stuff.
most of them, freeware.
Trouble is, 508 may have no confidence at all with such programs,
i'd always consider starting from the ol' Windows Movie Maker
to have his first steps done through editing.
later, he may decide for something better,
but there's nothing more friendly than Movie Maker
for an absolute beginner.

Special Effects can be downloaded for Adobe Premiere.

Re: Editing video
Here's the software that i've been using for the past couple of years (ebay). It's user friendly. I also use Pinnacle Studio, I recommend Pinnacle but for something cheap and easy Roxio 7.5 does the job.

Oh yeah go desktop. My Mac Pro is the sickest (and insanely fast) machine ever made.

At the same time I bought two 500GB internal drives, each for about $50...
Newegg is the ****!

I am using final cut and will never go back to editing on a PC. I see a mac desktop in my future once I get home from iraq.
