Snapped a Chain
Snapped a Chain
my question...
will the 520 chain hold up once i get the perminant link installed or should i save up another 300 to replace the brand new sprockets and chain i just put on my bike 2 days ago with a 530 conversion?
what happen....
I just got finished replacing my clutch and doing a 520 conversion... 520 was my first mistake... should have went 530 but the guy at the parts store told me a 520 chain was stronger then the stock chain and my stock chain was holding up to the amout of wheelies i normally do so i figured i wouldnt have any problems
i was popping the clutch in 2nd gear around 20 mph and my bike picked up enough to get the compression off the front forks and then the bike went down immeditly.. and just started coasting down the road..
it bent the rivets in the center of the master link about 1-2 full centimeters on both sides.. i ordered a new link thats a perminant so i am hoping that will solve my problem...

Re: Snapped a Chain
Dude, I run a 520 setup right now, but I'm switching to a 530 just for that reason. That could have been bad juju in a full out wheelie. I'm going with a 530 despite what anyone says and I'm sticking to that. I'd rather spend the extra money and add the extra mass for the added protection. I'd rather that then mouse trap a high chair or spreader.
Re: Snapped a Chain
If you're a big guy, I'ld go back to stock. If you're a little fella, it should hold up fine. I would imagine that the first master was installed incorrectly.
Re: Snapped a Chain
i'm between 185 190 usually.. 6'1... ever since i got the new link installed.. i bought a much higher quality one.. the chain has been holding up pretty good.. when it snapped i think there was to much play in the chain and the master link wasnt probablly done right like you said.. i'm going to try the 520 one more time.. hope it doesnt snap but its in the back of my mind now
Re: Snapped a Chain
chain slack is the answer i had to much slack in my chain when the guy i bought it from didnt get a smaller chain when he went 1 down in the front, mine has the 532 chain and it broke no problem the 10th time i clutched it
Re: Snapped a Chain
Isn't your stock one a 525? I would at least run the stock one or a 530 for security. Additionally, it's very important to have the tension adjusted right like mentioned earlier!
Re: Snapped a Chain
530 Is A Mistake. I Thought The Same Thing, Put A 530 On My 900rr Back In The Day And I Snapped 2 Chains. One Snapped At Full Speed The Other In A Wheelie. I Think Your Problem Is The Installer
Re: Snapped a Chain
i meant 300 to replace the chain and both sprockets.. i'd have to buy 2 new sprockets again.. it cost me a little less then 300 to do a full 520 conversion..
every time i was poppin the clutch before i could hear a pop from my chain.. now that i re-adjusted it my chain has no more popping noise and its much smoother and it has an instant reaction compared to the delay it had when it was a little loose..
the master link that came with the chain sucked to.. it had a clip on piece.. i bought one for 12 bucks that has 2 nuts you tighten then back the nuts off snap off the long piece of metal and its suppsoed to be as strong as rivets... its a perminant link but if i ever need to change it i have a wizzer so i can just chop the bitch off
Re: Snapped a Chain
i've used clip-style (cir clip) master links all my 4 years of riding and have never had a problem, you just sucked at installing it. if it had been ajusted properly with only a inch of slack... everything been fine, your lucky the front sprocket didn't throw the chain into your lower motor case and crack it open.
