What do your sponsors do for you!?
Re: What do your sponsors do for you!?
Sponsorship is all about R.O.I (Return on Investment)!! This is the most cut and dry way that any MAJOR company would look at sponsorships. The question that is posed is "If I give you $5,000 (example) to sponsor you, can you influence enough people to buy my product so I can at least recoup my original $5,000"? Most MAJOR companies will want 2 to 3 times of their original investment to make it worth while. I've read comments that say that the "best riders" are not getting the most lucrative sponsors & that some "average riders" are getting the big sponsors. That absolutely is 100% true, it is called "Marketablility". Steve Nash won the NBA MVP award the last two years and all of his endorsement deals in one year don't pay what Lebron James makes in one month from Nike. It's not always about who is "best" is it all about who can influence more people to buy their product.
My background includes work w/ Factory sponsorships on the MX & Supercross side of the industry. I currently am working w/ an up & coming Supercross rider that doesn't have one single "paying" sponsor, but is predicted to finish in the top 10 in the Supercross Lites class. Just because your fast (or skilled) doesn't mean that you'll get "paid". If your serious about your profession, you need an agent!! Now I'm not talking about a "Wallstreet suit" type agent, but someone that is well-spoken, has sport specific knowledge, tenacious, & can take some of the most humiliating rejections possible. This person's sole job is to find you paying gigs and to promote the sh*t out of you to anyone that will listen. Pay this person based off of the sponsors they get you. If it's cash, then they get a percentage of the sponsorship. If it's product, then you pay them a flat fee for their work. Promotion is a full-time job & most time companies won't pay as much attention to you if you are representing yourself. That is how life works, it sucks....deal w/ it. I'm working on starting an agency for motorcycle industry riders as we speak, but only in the infancy stages.
Anyway, sorry for getting off topic. You need to find a unique way to be able to promote your sponsors product. If you have a good finish at an event, call every sponsor and let them know what you did. If you sell some product, make sure that sponsor knows you sent the customer to them. It might seem "vain", but it works!!! Finally, if you are legit....you will need to sign a contract. If you can't live up to your end of the bargin.....don't sign it. This is a sure fire way that a sponsor will know that you are serious about this sponsorship & if they default on an issue you can always break out the contract. My two cents....Sorry for the length.

Re: What do your sponsors do for you!?
teach doin it big, screw a brand new bike an a dealership sponsor, teach has a known industry leader in retail bike sales of used bikes backing him. and because they are a used product business they have to meet rigorous standards making sure they're product is safe, so fro teach to get a cut like that lets the world know he puts in his work. and though teach and kane and all of us know this. sponsors want return of their investment + marketing, kicking some extra things down when it'll be made back by the sales tax on the items they sell is wirth it to them, but then again they'll only do it when they find a rider whos worth it to them. im not known nor have the best image so i couldnt hope for the best sponsors if that nor is that my focus, dont ride hoping to get sponsored, do it for the love of it and someone'll see it and appreciate it, maybe a few companies while ur at it, but this business aint about money, this aint even a business, this is a lifestyle, it aint gonna blow up like skateboarding, again, cus we have a dangerous hobby that not anyone can even try to do. anyone can try to ride a skteboard or try to bunny hop their huffy. but how many people want to spend a few grand on a good stunt set up when they're not interested in riding to begin with?

Re: What do your sponsors do for you!?
I had support from my dad b/c he rode from early age too, gave me first bike with 4, but when I started stunting it's like all the world crashed on me, EVERYONE - both parents, rest of the familly, gf etc., talked so much **** on the 1 thing I truly wanted to do...not just talking, I could choose life I had or go live on streets, banned from the house (and I'm a broke a$$ student with no job, so I gotta do all kind of **** to support myself)...so I rode undercover for some time, then grabbed some real sponsors and said **** it I'll better live on the street than without stunting...
