954 chop chop ?

Has anybody either put a different computer (Motec or Power commander) in a 954 before or removed the exhaust exup valve and airbox flap? mine is choppy as and was wondering if its due to the exup being removed or the computer added or both.

does is help removing it or not????

Re: 954 chop chop ?

i have a powercommander with a full hindle. it runs fine, unfortuently they dont have a program for hindle on the pc but i used yosh and it seems to run pretty good. best would be to dyno tune but i dont think that extra hp or 2 will make a diffrence

Yeah my Boy has a 954 and I rode it a few time there choppy as ****!! he took out the exhaust valve and it seemed to help he also retarded the ignition and that helped as well.... it was worse with the exhaust valve in due to the fact it there to make bottom end power!

Re: 954 chop chop ?

it wasnt too bad standard, then the exup seized. i was told if i took it out and put a powercommander in it will be even smoother. but circles are choppier than ever.....
The dyno dude has put heaps of fuel in at the bottom end but only helped a fraction, i dunno if he retarded timing....ill give that a shot.

any other tips to make less choppy peeps???

Re: 954 chop chop ?

Removing the valve makes the power more linear and gets rid of the 3 grand "surge" that is common in 954's and 929's. I think the main adjustment needs to be in the wrist. It's difficult to go from a 600 to a 954 and make a smooth transition.......Just make it (the 954) your main bike for 2 solid weeks. I jumped to the 929 from my 900rr and wanted to ghost ride it into a wall because I was getting frustrated. After a while, my wrist seemed to work much less and the throttle control was nice and smooth. The 954 is a brutal assasin pit bull that will bite if you don't pet it right. You can't just walk up to it and smack it on the a$$...you gotta be slow and put your hand out and let it smell you first.

Re: 954 chop chop ?

cheers, i have ridden Gixxer 1000,s for the last 5 years, only had the 600rr for 9 months and had the 954 for 3 months, i mainly use the big bikes. i found the 954 was not to choppy standard (less than Gixxer) but after i removed valve and put Powercommander on it became more violent.
its the initial 1mm movement of throttle that makes it feel like you just smacked it on the a$$
i may just have to put it back to standard??

Re: 954 chop chop ?

i took out the stacks in the airbox and the flap in the air box and disconected the exhaust valve.... made the bike run funny (go figure) so i gut the flap back in and re connected the butterfly in the exhaust and left the stacks out and it fixed that snappy problem.... but it did make the bike lag a little... i think that the 929 is a smother bike, the 954 just has some extra snap

Re: 954 chop chop ?

i have no flapper in mine, and the exhaust valve is permanently open. makes it a dog at anything under 3500rpm or so (no guages, so that's an educated guess). just feels sluggish. although that sluggishness makes low rpm control a lil easier for my non-throttle-control-havin self.

dunno if it makes a difference really, but i don't have any ram air ducts either. the front of the airbox is just wide open under the front edge of the tank. couldn't tell you if it makes a difference or not, since it was set up like that when i got it.

i've been playing with my power commander trying to smooth out that HUGE power spike at about 4000rpm. if i manage to come up with a decent map, i'll find someone to host it and put up a link, if you want to try it.

Re: 954 chop chop ?

I started out on a 929, once you get used to the power - its awesome. I just jumped over to a 954 and Love it. Need some more time in the saddle, but the torque is tremendous. I keep the stock exhaust & stock exhaust flap. I've done a few slip ons, and full systems - on the litre bikes it feels like they make LESS power down low, so any idle tricks were alot harder. So I like the bike BONE stock, stock can cut down like 6" less.

Stick w/ the 954, the bike rocks
