Hand brake: why don't you use one?

I've been rockin the engine brake forever, and the other night i discovered the joy of hand brakes and thinkin about getting one. It's so much fun... so, for those of you who choose not to use a hand brake... why?

Im not 100% sure

Ive had my handbrake kit sitting in a box in my garage for over a year now, I just cant bring myself to put it on.

Here are some excueses I give myself:
There are still many tricks to learn without it.
I dont have circles locked on the foot brake.
I drop it so much anythign but my ASV would get destroyed.

I think the real reason is the coolness/danger factor. I get no rush from doing stuff that isnt dangerous. When Im out on the road and I get up on the tank, I know that the only thing keeping me there is that miniscule amount of engine brake i have. That gives me a really good feeling, and thats the feeling thats kept me into stunting for so long.

Conversely, Im a bit of a helmet ****, go figure.

wierdo. hahahahahahhaha
I know exactly what your talking about tho... same reason I choose from time to time not to move my fingers onto the lever in tank stuff.
Its good to keep skills alive..... and the danger factor

thats understandable but you know there's always the option of keeping your fingers on the clutch and leaving the hb alone....

There's a big difference between the risk/danger of stnt riding and not wearing a helmet. I can't put it into words either, but I know what your talking about.

Re: Hand brake: why don't you use one?

I had one for a minute, and decided pretty quickly that it wasn't for me. I didn't like what it did for my style, and it took the danger/challenge out of alot of tricks. I also believe that I have alot of tricks to learn still that don't require one. The only thing you NEED it for is circle combos, and our sport is boring enough without more circle variations that people don't understand!

Re: Hand brake: why don't you use one?

Why would'nt you want to add more tricks to your bag....?
Just becuase you have one does'nt mean you have to relie on it.....

For example the Brunelle's chasing down spreaders and highchairs is far less entertaining than watching someone ride one at the same speed slowing it down throwing in scrapes........!!!!

people have been slowing down spreaders for years, and Id MUCH rather watch them scraped without a hand brake. Thats what makes it cooler than scraping a sitdown.

Re: Hand brake: why don't you use one?

wow vertical joes bike looks really wierd. must be too legit for me to think it looks normal.. very clean...
The thing with handbrakes, is they have a tendency to make you ride the brake alot, kinda like when you first learn brake control, going down the highway, smokin rotors cuz you cant rock the throttle control..... I did it back in the day and got out of it, then when i put my hb on, started doing it in HC, spread, special k etc etc, and decided to start doing them with no fingers on the hb... just rockin EB.
Turns out, they are more fun that way......

Re: Hand brake: why don't you use one?

i have a handbrake, but since i just learned hc, frogs, and 5050s i dont even use it. its there, so if i do need it i will use it, and i used to use it for SS's but i dont even do that anymore, its just kinda boring rocking a real slow ss going straight, im going to start using it for circles of different types.

i agree....... but im talking about show riders...that need to be right on every time. Not take several attemps to complete the trick.

Re: Hand brake: why don't you use one?

i dont get how it takes away from ur style or skill, i mean i cover mien with jsut 1 finger, and keep my idle down...all ym wheelies slowed down or not are on engine brake, i cant figure out how to use the the hb to slwo it down really?? and yah mayeb its jsut me but doin a nice spreader with one is jsut as fun w/o one...i mean the danger/thot of crashing sucks, i mean if i get injured im outa work, and outa riding, which wud suck....i hardly ever touch mine except for scrapes...not to mention it opens up a whole bag of tricks...i dont have reg circles locked, buti can do off the pg coasters good? u can still learn tricks that dont require it, and tricks that do at the same time...

also if ur anthing ova +20 u might as well have a hb
