Do You use a Police Scanner?
Do You use a Police Scanner?
Anybody out there use a scanner to detect cops coming to your spot that you stunt at? Or to listen for birds in the sky? In Central New York the police are targetting "reckless" motorcyclists. Basically sportbikes speeding and doing stunts. They are using alot of manpower, and sheriffs and state police helicopters. This is why I ride out in the adjacent less crowded counties, to practice and fool around on desolate country roads etc. Not worry about traffic, cops, aircraft etc. I can wheelie all day to my hearts delight and nobody cares.
I thought about getting a portable scanner to at least have at the spot to know of complaints when they are comin in etc. Or at the very least, listen in before I go out to see if an "operation" is in progress and where abouts they are, so I can avoid or be careful. There are ways to mount a scanner in a bike secretly and discretely and still listen to it while you ride, but I won't get into that.
Just curious as to who out there is using one. Seems like it would be a really good idea, especially if there is a task force with lots of departments and aircraft are used to pick on us. I refuse to let them have the upper hand. Guess I will be looking up alot more this summer as they will continue to do these stings.

a lot of times when i got out and hit the twisties i'll drop a handheld scanner under my back seat and plug it into my chatterbox to keep tabs while i'm riding... like you said, you can't let them have the upper hand... i do remember from college classes (criminal justice) that in some cases the use of a police scanner to aide in a crime worsens the charges or possibly makes them felony, but i'm not a LEO so i don't know all the implications...
Re: Do You use a Police Scanner?
lol...we used to use a scanner when we had band practice at my house. I had one ******* meighbor who would call the cops everytime someone pulled into my driveway. It definately kept us out of some trouble. We'd here the call......turn it down.....nothing they could do. lol

i also live in NYS, my bro got a ticket for having a scanner in his car i can not remember the charge i will ask him tomorrow. i guess basically if you have one and your using it the police may think you are using it to aid in criminal activity.
Re: Do You use a Police Scanner?
that sounds like a good idea, but you can only really get the codes for the general dispachers and such. when they do any sort of special forces, or stings, they use different codes. so you will not be able to hear that.

at least you would know that a complaint was reported at the lot or street your at and you could pack your **** up before they get there.

but it still will help, to use it in order to monitor the general disspatch. those codes you can get on the internet, or in books.
Re: Do You use a Police Scanner?
Trunk Trackers can get all agencies on one band.
Newer scanners cost like $500.
It's a felony to have one in a car.
Trunk Trackers don't follow Frequencies they follow the signature on them. A group of like 20-50 Freqs is shared by many different agencies and they all have different Signatures to them. With trunked systems it's like your cell phone, you'll be using different Frequencies all the time but the same phone number. Trunk Tracker follows the phone number so to speak.
For example you could have DPW, ambulance, fire, and police dispatch all sharing a group of 20-50 different Frequencies. Every time the police bumps in they could and probably will be on different Freq in that group of 20 -50 Freqs but they will be tagged with a signature number to them. This is a vague description of a trunked system.
With a trunk tracker you can monitor these signature numbers and turn on or off the signature numbers of your interest or lack of. This will make your monitoring more efficient as you won't be interrupted by someone going to mow a lawn while on a different channel someone is getting dispatched to your location.
New scanners work very well, but can be difficult to program and learn to use.
Older scanners are not worth a crap if you are considering this to monitor more then one agency.
Police Call has a listing for most all Freqs in the Country.

Cell phone Freq are locked out of most every scanner sold.
Some older scanners you can get the block "UPDATED". Most scanner scan from 12,000Mghz. all the way up to the 900,000Mghz. but that means nothing to the worth or value of a modern scanner.

I was just refering to the original post, about operations and such. when ever they put together somthing like that, they use a different frequency, or at least that is what my unckle who is a state trooper told me. unless you know it, and can punch in the frequency, you can't scan it. It's not that I think the SWAT team is going to break up your spot.
