What's wrong with all this 1% business? just curious as I don't have a clue why it's bad?

 

maybe that's just over here in the us. but a lot of old school biker gangs are 1%ers and they'd take offense to that big time. google it you'll see what i mean.

 

The 1% tag came from the AMA back in the, er, 50s IIRC, when bike 'gangs' were considered to be the biggest threat to public safety and moral puriety since ... hmm, probably the free black man. Of course, since then rock 'n' roll, horror films, heavy metal and then rap/hip-hop have taken the mantle of biggest threat to society, but back then it was bikers.

Much of what supposedly happened didn't, and much of what was supposedly perpetrated by the then tiny Hells Angels MC (whose entire membership was under 100) also either never happened or was massively exaggerated (and usually wasn't actually the HA anyway...) - a situation which was then exacerbated by films such as the Wild Ones.

Because of the negative biker image, the AMA issued a press release which stated that 99% of motorcycle riders were law-abiding citizens and it was only that 1% who were the trouble makers. The 'outlaw' bike clubs liked and identified with the outsider image and adopted the 1% moniker as their personal badge of honour - a badge of honour that, today, only outlaw bikers are 'allowed' to wear. If an outlaw sees a 99er wearing a 1% patch, he would take that as an insult and react by removing something they would passionately believe the wannabe had absolutely no right to wear ... and, more than likely, give them a bit of a slap, too, for being an ****(***)hole.
