XR 70 ?'s

Just bought a 00' 70 to go w/my 02' 50 for the kids. I'm wondering if the carb tuning info i've read will work for the 70? The 70 doesn't seem to pull as hard as the 50 which pulls hard 1st thru 2nd.

Thanks!

Re: XR 70 ?'s

i dont understand what you mean by gutless. it seems that a 70 has the same motor as a 50 with just a bigger bore

i agree my stock 50 pulls extremely hard compared to the 70.....so can this be improved?
Of course i'm not stunting these bikes, they're for my 7 & 5 year old girls.

Re: XR 70 ?'s

Its faster, and the 70 will pull the fiddy any day of the week in any gear. The thing is the gearing is differant, the wheelbase is longer and it's just bigger so it doesn't SEEM to have the 'oomph' a fiddy does. I prefer my 70 over the fiddy (at least the z?) and my friends do to. The fiddy is just geared so low..

My gearing is stock, lol. I can't do third gear wheelies on it. I mean I can, but theres no reason too, it's to fast, haha. But I rock 1st and 2nd gear all day long I'm also it racing it around, and have pretty much maxed it out in the little course I have set up around the house, bottoming it out on the turns. Where the 70 falls short on the bottom end, it makes up in topend, and the fiddy's BLOW up top. They got nothin, lol.

Re: XR 70 ?'s

I bought a 70 the other day. I don't understand how you all are able to wheelie it. I can't get the thing to pop up over a few inches. I have even tried gasing it and nothing happens (at least not much). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx...Jamie

You'll get used to it dude. 1st gear comes up so flowing now, 2nd is becoming...2nd nature, lol...and 3rd is a lot harder, but once it's up it just coasts sooo easily. Go about 5 mph in 1st and lean back and hit the gas a split second after accelerating...

Are you doing tis all with a stock set-up? If so, me being new to these small bikes, could you give me a more step-by-step guide as to how you are doing it? One guy said he somehow used the gears as a clutch, I just don't understand how he did that, something about put in gear, roll, put in neutral, then rev up and pop it into 1st and control it with the rear brake. Thanx for any help you can throw my way...Jamie

Yep, completely stock, minus the occasional pegs on the back which I don't use often, and the relocated kill switch so I can do highchairs and what not.

To 'clutch it'..Click it into the gear you want, but dont let the shifter back down. This puts it in 'neutral' (gear just hasnt engaged yet) rev it, and drop the shifter. I can't imagine this is too good for it, so I dont do it.

For a normal wheelie. I shift my *** back towards the end of the seat. Then kinda bend forward with elbows bent. Hit the gas, and right before it starts to hit the meat of the powerband, throw your weight back. Start in first, then second, and eventually you'll just get used to it. It's hard to describe, so you just gotta go for what works..

Yeah I don't imagine that clutching it too many times would make for a long lasting 70. I have tried sitting all the way on the back of the seat and goosing it trying to get it to pop up, but usually it only comes up a little. When you talk about bending arms and waiting til it hits the powerband, do you pull back on it, or what? Just curious, thanx for the info though, I will def. try it. Thanx man, Jamie

By the way, nice pic :YEAH

On these little bikes it's all about body position, hitting the right part of the power band and pulling up on the front end. Get rolling, then let off the gas for a second and then get back on the gas again, you will feel the power, that's the part of the power band you want to be in when you go to wheelie. Now lean back and give the throttle a good twist while pulling up on the handlebars at the same time. It will come up pretty easily if you are doing it right.

Forget about "clutching" it up. It's probably not too good for the clutch and there is absolutely no reason to do it. It's a hell of a lot better and easier to just power it up. If you really want to clutch it up then buy a manual clutch for the bike and clutch it up for real.

Yeah, I'd rather power it up before clutching, esp with the stock auto clutch. Jamie
