clutch mods, after 88 kit...inputs?

got my 88 running good, but i can tell the clutch isn't going to hold forever

i was just wondering how long they'll normally last w/ a bbk? weeks/hours?

and how much do i need to beef it up to hold the power? will springs do, or will i need plates and all?

buy the kitaco or tb heavy duty auto clutch. or buy the tb manual clutch kit. that big bore kit will eat up that clutch

ok well I just learned that I will need to do this after I put the 88 in. can anyone tell me how long there stock clutch worked after upgrading? I sorta need to know quick. I just found out I will have to upgrade and need to know whether I should even bother installing this 88 before the comp in texas or whether im screwed..

also like Glen asked what HAS to be upgraded?? Is just doing the springs enough? or what??

Unless i have tooo much fun... if thats the case ill be buying another fiddy to stunt..... 88 is cool for like highchairs but its a PITA for a lot of slow stuff... i dunno i just have a blast riding stock fiddys after riding mine...

Re: clutch mods, after 88 kit...inputs?

yea, i do miss the 50 part of the fiddy...now i know why people buy 2 of em

i can still do my slow first gear stuff, but 2nd gets up to speed way too fast for practicing combos right now...but i'm getting used to it though, i also kept stock gearing instead of putting the +1 sprocket that came w/ the kit on the front

it's a nice feeling to be able to power back up what would have normally been a lost wheelie in 2nd and 3rd gears :YEAH

Yeah true.. i went one up in the front... so 2nd gear isnt too slow anymore... it just takes some getting used and have to be a LOT smoother on the throttle but its still a blast..

Yea I panicked. Sorry about that. I installed the kit last night I still gotta check/set the valve clearance, jet the carb and put it and the exhaust back on. Then start tuning it.

I'm hoping it won't be too uncontrollable! I lost a lot of oomph in second when I did the last round of upgrades and hoping this should get me back up to speed and then some.. I still gotta pick up the +1 sprocket too I havent done that yet..

Re: clutch mods, after 88 kit...inputs?

Fuscat, i think you'll be cool w/' the stock clutch for the comp...i've been BEATING mine and it's holding up to the 88 pretty good, i felt a decrease in grab after the first 1/2 day but it's been holdin steady and i've been MX, stuntin, and tuning it WOT through 3 gears on my wideband bech to jet it..hahah

as for teh +1 tooth up front, that is gonna put more strain on the clutch right away so you might wanna watch that one and hold off for now ( i did)...you did the exact same thing by putting on taller tires, you decreased overall final-drive ratio wich increases top speed. and decreases teh motors mechanical advantage over the rear wheel.

and even on the stock sprocket you can get wound out SO much faster that it's doubled my stoppie distance just by not having to use most of my space to gain speed.

just my $0.02 on this project after a few days of abusing it, hopefully you'll be as happy as i am bout your kit. turn a fiddy to a monster!

Hurrican those are the 2 bros HD clutch springs that are starting to go also after a couple months??

Sounds like the best bet is to just replace the whole thing with the HD unit then..

Re: clutch mods, after 88 kit...inputs?

i've been using the Heavy Duty Classic Honda clutch in mine since I first put the Big Bore in and I took it apart recently to find virtually no clutch wear at all. To say I'm satisfied with the clutch is a understatement. I paid $150 for it and they recently dropped the price to $99 A very good investment.

The biggest difference you will notice with the HD clutch is the clutch will no longer slip when kickstarting the bike. If you kickstart a bike with a BB kit and stock clutch it usually takes a few times due to the clutch slipping.

Re: clutch mods, after 88 kit...inputs?

lol @ Glenns drunkin posts..

makes sense Silver! I just got mine running real good today been messin with it trying to get it tuned out. I noticed that about kicking it.. it slips by everyonce in a while..

what I'm not following is Houston Terrells post above about the sprockets. you said:

"i went one up in the front... so 2nd gear isnt too slow anymore..."

Im lost here cus my bike now with all stock gearing, like Turbo Glenn is running through 2nd gear pretty fast. I thought +1 in the front would slow it down a bit? Is this not the case?? Bout the only issue I have so far.
