tapered steering bearing installation???!!!???!!!

Hey guys i have a question and my 50 is in pieces for the weekend unrideable. I just got the bbr sp-5 forks and they came with tapered steering bearings. I cant seem to get the races to seat ALL the way into the steering tube. because they stick out, the forks dont go up all the way into the steering tube, making it impossible to attatch the triple clamp and bars. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO INSTALL THE TAPERED STEERING BEARINGS/RACES??????????????

put the races in the freezer for a while and heat up the neck, then drive them in

Re: tapered steering bearing installation???!!!???!!!

did you take out the old races first?
use a drift and a ballpine hama going around in a circle till hammered out on top and bottom, keeping it level as you work it out or it will dig shavings, check for metal shavings ,usually occure when removing old races these will get in your way when installing the new races.use a rag to run around in the steering stem, the shavings hurt when you stick em in your fingers a rag will just catch on them instead of your finger

to put the new races in you would use a bearing/ race tool, looks like a socket the size of the race, with the top made for hammering,or you can use a socket that size if you need to
hammer once at the top then bottom then left side then right,cris-cross pattern but more important doing it evenly trying to keep it level with the actual frame once you get to where you cannot get to the race you break out your socket and use it for the rest of the way into the race seat.

Hey can you guys tell me the number (or take a picture) on the bearings and races? I sure that with the numbers on them, I can go to the local bearing shop and get them for like $5.

i got exactly the same problem.

i thought i took the old races out, but I guess I didn;t take the part the races seat in out ...

I was getting ing of nervous screaming along at 30mph with the top nut only screwed on 1/3 of a turn!

if in doubt, get an expert to check it out. this part failing is not like an engine crapping out - you could end up in hospital
