1 Dead, Another 'Critical' After Motorcycle, Car Collide On Route 873
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
Lehigh County
A 50-year-old Lehighton man was killed Wednesday morning when a sport utility vechicle coming in the opposite direction on Route 873 in Washington Township, Lehigh County, crossed the center line and hit his motorcycle head-on, state police said.
Lamar Haupt, an ordained minister and security officer, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision with an SUVdriven by Harold Schmick, 48, of Jim Thorpe, at 8:10 a.m. near Hillside Road, state police in Bethlehem said.
Police said Haupt, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown 50 feet from the bike. Schmick is listed in critical condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, hospital officials said. He's using a respirator.
Haupt had worked with the Lehigh Law Enforcement Officers Association, a private security company that works at several Lehigh Valley events, including the Allentown Fair, for more than five years, according to James Spang, the company's owner.
Spang said Haupt, a lieutenant and chaplain with the security company, was to work a 9:30 a.m. funeral procession in Allentown on Wednesday morning.
''He did not have to be at work and he was probably taking the scenic route,'' said Spang, adding that the motorcycle Haupt was riding was a company bike used during parades, funeral processions and other events. ''He was probably coming in early to polish the bike so it would look good for the funeral. That was his normal routine. That's the type of guy he was.''
Spang said Haupt had graduated from a motorcycle riding course with the Philadelphia Highway Patrol in June 2003. He said he had just spoken to Haupt the night before when he worked Parent-Teacher Night for Northern Lehigh High School and normally worked security at the Main Gate Night Club at 17th and Liberty streets.
