Re: Winter storage question

I kinda dont want to do **** about it. I'm so lazy. im leaving it in my moms garage with instructions for her to start it for 5 mins every week (she lives in a different city and i dont have a garage.) idle up to 3k so the battery charges a little. any problems with that?

Re: Winter storage question

Just make sure you run it after you put some of that stabalizer in, so it helps sit in the carbs also. I'd tell her to run it for more than 5, maybe 10 minutes at least. It's best to get the engine to operating temperature, and give it time to lubricate all critical parts(Ie, more than 5 minutes could do).

Re: Winter storage question

alright heres the final word:

Sta-Bil
Oil change
run the bike long enough to work the stabilizer through the carbs
turn the petcock OFF while the bike is still running
let it die.........no gas in the carbs right?
condom on the tailpipe
cry, whine
drink beer all winter

Re: Winter storage question

yep, just run the stabilizer through the motor (full tank, with sta-bil added), then just before you store it, top off the tank, and add some more sta-bil)

shut the petcock off, run until it dies, then change the oil. Pull the battery, put it on a piece of cardboard inside somwhere out of the way. You dont want to start and idle it up b/c that will just heat cycle it, which will make water condense and form water droplets where you dont want them. The oil change is to get all the old gas/contaminates out of the oil so it doesnt sit in the engine for an extended period of time. When its time to ride again, throw a trickle charger on the battery for a little, and go ride.

Re: Winter storage question

Just add stabalizer.
Run it through a bit
Don't bother changing the oil. your going to do it anyways when you get a tune up in the spring right?
Lube chain one last time and other things
Put battery on a peice of wood and trickle charge.
Put Bike on a piece of wood. Cement dries out and cracks your tires
I usually clean it and poishe it. Then cover it.
Drink Lots of Beer
You'll be all set.
I think I got two more weeks and then i'm done out here in MASS.

Re: Winter storage question

ive heard that gasoline expires (turns into sludge) after two weeks. sta-bil prevents that.

if you ride for 15 minutes a week (no snow?) i guess that would be fine.

oil changes are always nice though.

Nah, you can leave it without stabile in it for a longtime as long as you drain the bowls. And I would pull out the battery and put it inside on a slow charge every now and then

Re: Winter storage question

I could be wrong, but wouldn't it be better to just let it sit all winter with the sta bil and not start it every week, cause your starting it all those times with the cylinder walls dry, instad of just starting it one time at the beginnning of the season. I mean just to keep the # of starts to a min??? And you are bringing all the metal up to op temp and all the rubber hoses and then letting them cool down to 3o degrees or whatever it is outside/garage, and I know metal expands and contract when it gets hot and cold, that is what I was told when I stored my Trans am for the winter and it made sense to me

Re: Winter storage question

I have never done any of that... I always put mine away in Dec. and pull it out in late Feb. or March fire it up and go. Never had a problem in the 10 years I've been riding.
