having a hard time with stripping plastics
having a hard time with stripping plastics
I am prepping the plastic to be repainted so I am stripping the paint from the plastic. I stripped the lower fairings, front fender and gas tank without any problems. I am now at the mid fairings that cover the engine and rear fairings that hold the seat and I have run into a problem. It seems that under the paint there is some gooey sticky adhesive almost close to tar underneath the paint. Its a pain in the ***. I am using bulldog paint stripper for flexible parts on the plastic. I used aircraft remover for the tank. The sticky stuff doesn't come off with the bulldog stripper. I can scrape a little off but its like taring a new road. What is this stuff, and how can I get it off?
Re: having a hard time with stripping plastics
Why are you stripping it? All you had to do was sand it with some 150, prime it, sand again with 600 and paint.
I just done mine 2 weeks ago and it turned out SWEET!
You might be running into spots where someone done a fix with fiberglass or something. I did on my mids too.
Good luck.

Re: having a hard time with stripping plastics
I am not the one doing the painting. The guy that paints the bike does not do any prep work. He will leave the stickers on and not bother to sand anything and he will paint over all of it. He is the cheapest painter I know for this reason. Guess i will have to find a way.

Re: having a hard time with stripping plastics
I got tired of it and just took all the parts to the painter. He looked at it and saw what had to be done as far as primer and repair for the bare metal tank and middle fairings and charged me for it. I wasn't tripping. 3 or 4 days and it will be ready. I've been without a bike for a month and i can't wait. It's going to be totally re-done. Wicked!! Bling-bling!!

This is a very unique color. It looks like a pearl white. Nice!!! Good match on the wheels and fairing stay. With a fresh paint job like that you may want to invest in some frame sliders.

It's '04 Escalade Ice Pearl (pearl white). I didn't do anything to the wheels, their still the stock bright white. I did paint the stay the same color though...
I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It was the first time I ever sprayed paint!BTW, It does have sliders...their white too...look close...

They are pretty hard to see at that angle....
Re: having a hard time with stripping plastics
yea strippin all the way down is a pain. I just sand down like joneser and paint over it, never even see them, you do have to take a heat gun and pull the stickers off the plastics. Try a heat gun or hair dryer, maybe heat it up a little and they you can peal the stick off?
