Valve Adjustment
Um, in my past experience......and I really hate saying this because of that.......take it to a mechanic(preferably one you've dealt with before) If it's just a small rattling, should just be valves, how many miles does the bike have on it?
F4i's are kinda known for the cam chain tensioner goin out. If it is under warr..bring it in. If not there is a company that make manual tensioners that ppl run. Think it is like 45 bucks. dunno the brand.
the brand is ape and I have heard of a few but not that many cct going out. Gixxers are ther worst for going out.............. You sould go for a vavle adjustment around 12,000 miles.... I had mine done at 8600 to get it out of the way and have it running like a champ....
The more you take care of it the more you can stunt it without all the complications longer..........

The gixxers aren't THE worst. They aren't great but I have heard and witnessed of more f4is needing them than I have of gixxers needing them. If the noise is a high consistant ticking sound it's probably the valves. If the noise is a grinding/clacking sound it is probably the CCT. Put the bike on the stand and stand on the right side of the bike and hold the throttle at whatever rpms the noise is consistant and listen closely to the right side of the engine, do the same on the left side. If its loud on the right side its the CCT for sure. If you determine it is the CCT, get a manual one from APE. www.cbrzone.com -- its like 48 or 49 bucks. I just got one for an F3 last week. You shouldnt need to adjust your valves until somewhere around 12-15K miles.
It's more of a consistant ticking at around 5000 rpm. It's not very loud at all yet, but I still notice it. My dad has been working on cars since he was born pretty much. He told me not to worry about it untill it gets louder. He's old school. He told me its just getting loosened up or broken in. Should I take care of it now or wait untill it gets louder.
Previous F4i owner<-----
Hey man, check it out...
My first bike was a 2001 F4i. I bought it BRAND NEW and from day one, it had a slight rattling noise between 5000 and 5500 rpm. I asked everyone what the hell it was and everyone said it was the CCT. So I asked everyone what I should do about it and everyone said leave it alone. So trust me when I say leave it alone and it will be fine. I am now on a 2001 929RR and it has the same damn thing. Rattle between 5000 and 5500 RPM's. It's a honda thing. Also, recommended first valve adjustment fot that bike is 16,000 miles. My F4i, which my roomate now has so it's still in my garage, has 20,000 miles on it and still has not had the valves adjusted. The valves are not ticking. I personnally would have had them adjusted at 16,000 but he is broke and doesn't care.

its the CCT
every F4i owner I've talked to has had theres replaced...or needs it replaced. Including me. If I was you I'd go get a manual tensioner. So you can adjust it when needed.

just leave it...every f4i i see at the shop rattles at 5 grand. If you replace the cct, it'll go away for awhile...but it will come back. I'd stay away from the manual ones...its too easy to burn through the cam chain slipper if you adjust it too tight. If you set it too loose, the chain will jump teeth on the cam sprockets and blow your bike up.
how difficult is it to adjust valves? i've got a service manual on the way, and i really hate the dealership here, and my bike has around 13k miles, so i'm hoping to adjust them myself over winter, cause $60/hr labor is a little out of my price range when i only make $7/hr
