900rr starting problem...

96 900rr, 19k miles

Starter just barely cranks over then quits. Thought it was a bad battery, but i swapped it with the batt. out of another bike and still had the same problem.

So i'm thinking maybe theres a short somewhere, or maybe starter going bad? it acts just like a dead battery, but the battery is fine.

any suggestions?

Did it crank fine with new battery and then die or is battery still good?

Disregard previous. Sounds like juice is either being lost when starting(something with starter), or there may be some wires crimped or loose which is effecting electrical flow. I would say start at the starter and work back checking the wires first. With 19k miles **** might be loose.

My stator(not starter) went out on my gixxer which caused the battery to die, before it gave out it kind of sounded like when you crank your car when its real cold and it has a bad battery---kinda sounds like it just don't have the muscle to fire the engine up. But like I said I would check all the wires from your starter back to the battery. If bike has been stunted a while you could have knocked something loose or kinked a wire causing a dead spot(causing power flow to stop or slow down) which would make it sound like your battery is dieing or dead. That is about all the help I can give you without hearing the bike for myself. And yes if starter is bad that is one of the first signs. Will bike crank at all or is it just engine just rolling over and not cranking.

engine just barely rolls over when you first hit the starter button, then after a second or two it stops and you can just hear the clicking noise from the relay i think.

If it is dieing then I would say you have some sort of starter problem and not the wiring. Reason being if it was the wires(crimped-broken-or loose) it would not being dieing out. Sounds like your starter is failing to me. Definately not a wire if it is rolling over then just clicking.
