He was an aircraft mechanic before that, but they wouldn't count that as experience so he won't get paid decent until his 3 year is up in May....then i think he'll be considered certified or something...but they have 3 levels at Jevic where he works....i forget the first one, the 2nd is "helper", the 3rd is "tech"....you have to be really good to be a "tech" and get paid the big bucks.

and the investment in tools is expensive....he has over 10K in tool boxes, i don't even want to know what he has in invested in the tools!

if you like working with your hands it's fun, and it's not 12 hour days in a mine.
Being a mechanic has it's bad points . At a dealer you have to sell work . If there is no work you don't get paid (if you are on book time) . I will never work for a dealer again . Of course you can go work for midas and get paid with commision , but if you don't get work , you still don't get paid .

You also don't need schooling or certification to be hired . It helps , but experience is what gets you in the door . It also helps if someone refers you . You step out of school and you are still a newbie in the field . Plus you are out the money you spent on school . You are already in the hole . Most places won't hire a newbie at full scale anyway .

If you decide to be a mechanic , choose somewhere that you can get a fleet of vehicles . (large delivery companies , large rental companies , large business companies that have lots of vehicles , com ed , even garbage truck companies etc.). Anything that you can get a fleet of your own to take care of . You will have to take responsibility , but there is no selling involved . If a truck needs parts , it gets them because the vehicle must run to complete the job .

Also go union . Mechanics with minimal experience can start out at a level 1 (out of 8) and work his way up every 6 months . At the last level you will Journey . Most good unions have good pensions . Also there is job security .

Also look to see what benefits you get from the company . A high paying job is jack squat if you get no benefits for you and your family .

Tools , you buy as you go . Doing it this way won't set you back $$ in the long run . Try to pay cash . Don't finance your tools . Tool dealers are just as bad as having a maxed out credit card only worse . They want money weekly .

Expensive , overpriced tool boxes are a joke and only a status symbol . Buy a large used one . Or buy a new one and keep it , then trade it when you need more space . Matco sells a new triple bank for like 5.5g . That should be plenty of room for even a Journeyman .

Personally , if i had a chance to go back , i would pick another career . Getting dirty everyday gets old quick
