Project XR..... w/pics

Okay... this was too good a deal to pass up. It's an 83' XR500. They only made this bike for a couple years. It has dual carbs going into a single cylinder. It's got disc up front and drum in the rear, but I can lock up the drum easily on dry pavement. It's got an adjustable air shock on the rear and conventional air/oil fork up front.

The overall condition is pretty bad, but it runs and runs well! I got it home, pulled the carbs and cleaned them. I also drained the gas and changed the plug. After doing that... in the amount of kicks it would take the gas to get through the carbs to the plug... it fired. Ran perfect!! Never spuddered.... never coughed or even hic-uped!! I took it for a spin down the road and everything but the speedo worked! The brakes are strong, the motor is strong... hell... it still has the original handlebars! Now it's just a matter of time to tear it apart and build it into an "old school" supermotorard!

-Drew

PS.... I know you all want to know.... it was only $150... and runs too!

Re: Project XR..... w/pics

Yup... she'll be strickly street legal... no nobbies on this toy. Like Jay said... gonna have 17's on the front and rear and some raised Pro Taper bars. As for that plastic... well... last night I scrapped that white/pink film off the outside of the tank and think that I can get it looking stock red again with some elbow grease. However, I'd like to paint the fenders, side number plates and the frame. I got the motor out and cleaned up... man... what a mess that thing was!

Here's some before and after pics of the motor....

Re: Project XR..... w/pics

Alright.... here's what I've got done so far. The frame has been stripped, primed, and painted. I used a gloss grey that looked chrome untill I added the clear coat. Once the clear coat was applied.... it looks very simular to the grey Honda uses on the EX frames.

The plastic is stock.... It's actually the original plastic too. I sanded down the tank to get to the original Honda orange. The number plates still had the original yellow background vynil on there, so I removed that to see the bright orange underneath... masked it off.... and painted around it. Now I have a number plate background to match the tank. I used Krylon paint for plastic... it works great! Jay is doing the same to his supermotard... hopefully he'll share some pics soon.

Re: Project XR..... w/pics

Here, you can see how bright the frame was before clear coating.... thank God that the clear helped darken it up.

And the final product.... you can see here how well the orange, blk, and grey mix together.... should be a good looking bike.

Re: Project XR..... w/pics

Last one for this step in the process. Now that the frame is ready... I'll start by cleaning or replacing each individual part to be placed back on the bike. I'll be making a list this evening and order all my parts early this week.

I've decided to build this sooner rather than later, so I can take it to VT with me and do some street riding with Jay and Hazen. Phear... this means you gotta get the Ninja Junk going before July 18th, so we can roll out on some pavement!
