Should I make my fiddy street legal???
Should I make my fiddy street legal???
I'm going to court tomorrow for riding my pocketbike on the street. Right after I got caught (first time at that) I took back my pocketbike cause i figured if i'm stuck in parking lots a fiddy would be alot more fun. Anyways, Now i've found out that I can make my fiddy street legal in nebraska if i put on a horn, headlight, and brake light. I don't want to get fu@ked with again but if I make it legal and then a cop sees me riding wheelies or something I figure he'll freak and then i'll have something on my driving record for the stupid fiddy. Plus i'll have to wear a helmet all the time then too.... what do you guys think? Any of you have legal fiddys?
Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
A couple of my buddies bought the Baja Designs kit and were able to get moped plates here in MI..I've seen the kits, but whether or not you could pull it off seems to vary. I was pumped to see it work in MI, so I'm probably gonna get one now too.
Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
just make sure you get a new stat. or your burn out the electrics on it. the baja kit includes it. The rest is just normal lights you can make yourself for less. Also you may want to check law, if you make it street legal. Instead of get stupid fines for ridin them on the streets. They can give you points and **** agains your licence, like its a motorcycle ticket. Since its a street bike.

Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
forgive my ignorance here but am I understanding that since the fiddy's are considered an offroad motorcycle that if I was to get caught the tickets I get would NOT go against my state drivers license as the tickets were accumulated while riding an offroad vehicle??
and what does registering it have to do with anything?? when I bought mine the dealer gave me a packet of info and told me I HAD to go to the DMV and register it. I went and paid sales tax and handed over the MSO and the title application the dealer filled out. I did not get a plate or anything for it but I did get it registered to my name. You guys havn't done that? Or does your states not require it. And if you didn't and it gets stolen are you just F'd since its not registered in your name???
sorry I am trying to figure this all out..

Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
Ended up with a $50 fine plus $40 court costs from the judge. The guy was actually pretty cool, he just said we should keep them in the driveway but he thought they would be fun.... the maximum penalty we could have recieved would have been a $500 fine. Then the guy right after me had possesion of weed and parafanilia (sp?), each had a maximum fine of $100. LOL i love it, better to smoke than ride a pocketbike on the streets!
Fuscat i don't know about your state, but here the pocketbike was considered a minibike (as is anything offroad) so since its not a licensable vehicle you can only recieve a fine, it doesn't affect your insurance or driving record.
When I say register it i mean make it street legal, get a motorcycle title for it, horn lights plate the whole 9 yards. This is the first year nebraska has required that off road vehicles be registered but yes there is an off road registry here too. I've decided to wait on my title because i bought mine from outta state so its going to have to be inspected and everything. I'm just gonna wait and make it all street legal then get the title as a motorcycle, i'll just have to pay the $5 fine for waiting longer than 60 days to get it titled/registered. But that way even if i don't ever get it licensed I will have the option since it will have a motorcycle title and not an atv/minibike title like it would if it wasn't made street legal first.

Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
i think eventualy i'm gonna make my SDG street legal as far as head lights horn turn sig... i think i can licance it as a moped... dunno yet...
as our laws stand now in oregon, as long as its under 50cc and you got a helmet on you can ride in the bike lane, me and my buddy went for like a 2-3 mile ride today on the main streets, passed a few cops and no one said a word to us. of course his bike is 106cc and mine is 107cc, but theres no way for them to tell.
i'm sure the laws will change in a year or so

Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
Looks like my city may have the 50cc loop hole as well, maybe considered a "Motorized Bicycle" by there own definition?
7/1/00 (14450 & 14492) 18 - 3
§18.01.001 City Code, Indep., MO
MOTORIZED BICYCLE means any two (2) wheeled or three (3) wheeled device having an automatic transmission and a motor with a cylinder capacity of not more than fifty cubic centimeters, which produces less than three gross brake horsepower, and is capable of propelling the device at a maximum
speed of not more than thirty miles per hour (30 mph) on level ground. The term motor bike as used in this chapter shall mean a motorized bicycle .
And if this is the case they list a whole section of rules & regulations pertaining to said Motorized Bicycles. It will basicly boil down to wearing a helmet and having a drivers license and riding on the far right hand side of the road or bicycle lanes when available. That and if not equiped with lights has to be put up a half hour after sunset and cant come out until a half hour before sunrise!
Seems to meet those criteria to me! :YEAH

haha damnit. I thought I read on the spec sheet on honda.com they considered it an "automatic" since it doesnt have a manual clutch. Must have misread that. Mine is a stock motor though and speed and HP would be pretty hard to pinpoint by a city cop on the side of the road unless he clocks you rapping it out before pulling you over. ahh well back to the drawing board. Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
just about any cycle dealer can order it in... think its in the parts unlimited catalog. the guys here in Grand Rapids are the ones Jay was talking about. Has a new stator, signals horn brake and headlight. it's a pretty sweet set up but they're like 400 or 500 bucks each for the complete kit. also has a battery pack that recharges while you ride and stuff like that. but both their fiddies are street legal now. have a moped sticker that they leave on the turn signal mount. Kit comes off in like 5 minutes. one already got stopped though for speeding....38 in a 25... may wanna look into speedo set up for it. have to see if we got any pics somewhere so you can see it installed.
Re: Should I make my fiddy street legal???
Hey im in missouri too and i got stopped by the cops one time and they tried for an hour to prove that it wasnt a moped but in the end they gave in and bought it. They only asked what displacement it was and if i had a drivers liscence, they didnt ask about the automatic or horsepower and top speed stuff. The thing that took the most time was for the dumbass to find the section in the law book about mopeds.
