Frame Painting

I havent been on here in a while and since it's winter here in NH i totally stripped my 50 down. now i have the engine, frame, swingarm, pipe, forks and handlebars, and all other parts in plastic bags all out on my work bench. i have started to clean the frame from grease and dirt and all that stuff, this is going to take me a while since i can only work on it after school. But i was just wondering if after i get all that stuff of if i should stand the whole frame and everything down to bare metal or just scuff up the paint with light grit sandpaper? i dont know if this matters but i am either going to rattle can it or i have this spraygun, i dont know if i use one or the other if i should dand more? i was just looking for some advice from someone who has done this before and if anyone has pics of like all theri steps that would help out alot. thanks

Re: Frame Painting

alright thanks. yeah i kind of just got the bug and took the whole bike apart! haha, but yeah i am just not really sure if i should bring the frame down to bare metal or not? if not im just gona scruff it up with rought grit sandpaper then soft grit. then i was gona do 2-3 coats of primer then 4-5 coats of paint. im just not sure if i should go rattlecan or use my spray gun either? i know that will cost alot more becasue it has to be custom mixed and paint thinner. im just not sure if its all worth it. like i dont know how much better it would look? if anyone has pics of either rattle canned or spray gun that they did themselves i would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Frame Painting

yo man scuff it down and take your time to spray it with a gun. unlace the wheels and paint the hubs too. i painted mine with candy green with lime pearls, and let me tell you its way worth it. the rest of my crew rattled thiers and there is no comparison. if your going to do it do it right man!!!

Re: Frame Painting

the hubs are chrome so the paint wont stick. they kid i bought it off of painted them and if all just scrapped off, nd now it look stupid bc you can see all of his scuff marks. i also dont have a booth to paint it in. so idk ill post picks of it apart soon then ill post when its done hopefully it comes out good. and its still too cold here to paint it outside which is the only place i have.

Re: Frame Painting

I used 600 grid, all rust spots i took down to bare metal. The rest was real close but still left a lil paint on it. Sprayed with auto pant in a can from autozone. Made by dupont. Turned out real good. I have washed it at the car wash 3 times since then and it still is holding up great.

If you want a really nice finish, sand the frame down real well. Shoot it with primer a few coats to build up a layer. Sand it with some 1000 grid till smooth. Shoot with some paint, few coats. hit that up with some 1000 grid till smooth. Then shoot clear on it. and hit that with some 1600. It will shine!

Re: Frame Painting

Woa, stripping it down is a lot of work. You can easily just tape off parts u dont want painted and spray bomb the bike when its fully set up.

But it all depends on the look you are going for. If u want a top notch professional job then yes take the time and do it right but you can still get damn good results with a spray can and tape!
