Quick ring question....
Quick ring question....
ok, first off let me compliment fab5 on his exemplary service!!! i ordered my piston and oil pump on wednesday and it's already here!!!...great job....
second...i had a quick question about ring installation,
the piston came with 5 rings, one oil control, two thin ones that go on either side of the oil control, and two compression rings, one silver and one black...which one goes on top??? and what is the best position for the gaps in all these rings?? 180 from each other??top bottom?? sides???
thanks,
-matt

Re: Quick ring question....
should be polished on top black in middle, and seperate the gaps at 60 degree intervals on all rings including the oil scrape rings.....but not knowing the contents of your kit i cannot say for sure....best to ask fab if that's who you got it from, i'm sure he knows.
ohh...and if it's like mine the "r" side goes facing the top of the piston.

Re: Quick ring question....
chrome goes on top. any lettering on ring always goes up (this applies to any engine). piston ring gaps can be argued on their installation. there must be a million different ways in all sorts of manuals. i like to put mine so each ring is 90 degrees apart with each gap landing in between the wrist pin and the thrust surface. it doesnt really matter just so the gaps arent all lined up. you can disassemble the engine after running it for a couple hours and the gaps wont be anywhere near where you set them

Bike still runs.
and what in the h*ll is a thrust surface?
I introduced your Ohio boys to the race head tonight. Good kit Fab. I haven't seen a bike in front of me since I installed it.
