How much did that cost and how long did they take to do it?

Re: got some stuff back from anodizing

Anodizing isn't a material, like chrome or powder coating, that can rub off. It's a treatment to the metal that makes the surface very hard (scratch resistant) and corrosion resistant. The process actually intentionally oxidates the metal, and then they use dyes to give it a certain color. It looks awful damn pimp!

The only problem is that the color of the finished part can be impacted by the quality of the metal, and how porous it is. If you do two brake levers for example, one may look slightly darker, or deeper, based on the porosity of that part and the quality of material it was made from.

Powder coating is more consistent, and there are many more colors available, but anodizing is more unique and just looks bad ***.

That is all today for Anodizing 101. Class dismissed.

Re: got some stuff back from anodizing

thinks for the info Jason. A buddies carb cap is anodized and he took some pliers to it once ('doh) and it scratched the ano right off.. so I'm guessing it isnt real deep in the metal then? I was just wondering if say a rock flyin up nails one of brads rims how much damage it will do?

and is it expensive to have done like powdercoating?

Re: got some stuff back from anodizing

Well, I know that some people have matte paints that they're marketing as "anodizing" products, but they're really just paint. As I understand it, the anodizing is done through positively charging the piece, and then the dyes are bonded directly into the material. However, using something hard and abrasive like pliers might be enough to scratch it off.

Basically...paint is less durable than powder coating, and powder coating is less durable than anodizing....but nothing is bullet-proof.

I think that the anodizing would hold up very well to small rocks and other things you might run into with a fiddy, but it's not going to protect from deep scratches in a wreck, or from grinding on a curb or something.

As far as cost goes, the process costs just about the same as powder coating, and should be priced similarily. Some shops charge a premium because it is a somewhat rare process that not everyone does.

Hope that helps some. I'm no expert, but I happen to be having some powder coating and anodizing done right now on my 900RR Streetfighter, and just had all of these things explained to me by a shop.

Re: got some stuff back from anodizing

I dont know why but there is like 10 anodizing shops in San Jose. you would think the process was invented here or something. So the price to get it done here is pretty competitive. Cheaper then powdercoat. I got all that done for 60.00$

Re: got some stuff back from anodizing

Thanks again for explaining Jason, and I just have to ask does the S1 in your name have anything to do with Buell??

Brad thats pretty cheap really. I would have thought to be a lot more expensive then that. Those rims are just disgusting. If I ever end up with a set of them billets im gonna have to cop your style on that ****. Just too bad ***!

Re: got some stuff back from anodizing

Hats off to you Brad Reynolds, you are def. a . That is a real nice ano job on those rims and kicker. You got a real good $ on that work, $ 60 is cheap. I'm sure your powdercoating will look also. I have a bunch of stuff on my Triumph Daytona 595 powdercoated Mirror Black and can't wait to get the done next.
Keep posting those pics as the work gets done. :YEAH
