I almost have to agree with that article. I'm not really sure what to do with my new 1000 engine, I'm going to ask Robin what he would like to see, but I can see the basic theory the mechanic is presenting. The '01 750 that I bought off B.J. was the fastest basically stock 750 around- bar none. His technique included a 2 or 3 mile standup leaving phoenix, lol!
Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
there's two ways to break it in:
A: ride it like a puss like the manufacturer says or
2: ride it like you stole it, or in other words ride it new like you're gonna ride it in 5k miles
but at far as longevity goes, i'd stick w/ A. bearings and seals need to seat and such, and they dont do that well when you're running the **** outta it.

I read it, and I do believe most of it. Remember, he does say that "A GOOD WARM-UP IS CRITICAL." After it's warmed up for 5 min, hammer the *****
Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
i think the manual says make sure the temp gauge reads before you take off. personally i'm not comforatable til its at least past 100 preferably 140 or 50. pretty much enough time to start the bike then go put your gear on.
EDIT: i didnt know you when you got the 6 but i'm guessing you were pretty puss on it at first, and yours is one of the most reliable bikes out here.

Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
When I got my first Busa, I was told not to rev-limit it for the first 250 miles, after that have at, and I got 23,000miles out of the motor, before I lost a rod bearing. I might add I have the engine apart, and see no reason for failure, and no signs of abuse. I believe, that the impact from the car may have shifted the crank just engulf to bind things up, or possibly it was the month I ran it with out a radiator, who knows? My new one I pretty much just didn’t rev-limit the bike till I changed the oil at 600mi, but it as still run hard, just not too hard.
So, we’ll see in about another 9,000mi if it out lasts the other one. Oh by the was I broke the first one in by the book, it was this one that I beet on from the beginning.
Just remember run good oil and keep it changed, with a new filter every time, and it shouldn’t matter how you break it in.
P.S. I do let it warm up for about 5 min for the first few hundred miles.

Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
My opinion is that the purpose of the breakin period is to get the engine used to running. If you are going to beat on it, then beat on it for the breakin period. I build car motors alot and we always tell people to break the cam in with a 1 min 2000rpm rev right off the bat. And then do whatever you plan on doing to it(with the exception of holding high rpms for the first 50-60 miles. This works well, with good reliability. The key to engine reliability is not the breakin as much as it is the warming up before driving and fresh oil.
by the way the cam breakin is really on needed on pushrod motors.

Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
The reason for a good warm up is sometimes due to the different components and alloys that the engine is constructed of. If aluminum conducts heat quicker than steel, but both components are stressed from the start, something has to give(read-not good).
Warm it up andDO IT!

Kick *** avatar, that's old school :YEAH Yeah, definately a good point with all the types of metals in an engine, that can make/break you on these "Hammering" style break-ins.

Hey thanks! That was the summer of 2000........ back when I could come close to winning some stunt competitions.... lol, so much for keepin' up!
That '97 was
. I finally sold it the other night. Oh well,
Might as well buy a house and do something productive with that money- as opposed to burning off perfectly good tires and other acts of insubordination to traffic laws.
Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
I've spoke with a couple mechanics about this and as long as you change the oil...ride it however the **** you want after you warm it up. What the "Break in" period is for is to wear the seals down and collect the worn areas in the oil. You can do this at high RPM's or low, you just risk less (slightly less) at low rpm's than higher ones.

Re: Anyone Break A Bike In This Way?
i rode the ***** off of mine when i got it, and it hasn't had a single problem with the motor yet.
i do 2 race bike engine rebuilds a week and this is how i break them in. Haven't had any problem with the motors i do.
