"they" say that when you have a bar and are learning and you do happen to scrape, then there is a good chance that because of lack of control that you will hit the bar a little sideways. You hit that bar wrong and you are usually screwed. No bar = your plastic squishin' in and your bike not taking off on you as bad if you lose it...
