I doubt that it is illegal. And if it is and they pull you over, just tell them it's more lighting so you can be more visible at night.

I have green neons in the wheel wells, bike's blue and looks SICK at night.
I called the local police station and the guy said that as long as they're not blue then there shouldn't be a problem. That's Massaschusetts though, you'd have to check with your state. Mass is usually the suckiest about these things though.
