Should be pretty much a straight swap. The wiring is only different on the ignition and gauges and those types of things.

I just put a 99 in my 96...

The cooling system is different, the location of the speed sensor, and gauges/connections. Internally the number of clutch plates and basket are different, and there may be other things on the inside, but it won't affect your swap.

As for your question about a rebuild....why?

well,.......I am going to have to do the valves and cam chain this winter, but.......at low rpm(when its cold, or when it is given just a little gas from idle) I am hearing what sounds like either a wrist pin loose or some piston slap from one cylinder.....I know the compression on the number 1 is about 20 psi lower than the others and am getting prepared.....if an engine swap is cheaper I will go that way....and rebuild when I am not itching to ride.
